“Man Gwan,” interrupted Ah Sze when she saw Man Gwan standing in the hallway. Man Gwan snapped back into reality.
“What?”
“Are you okay?” Ah Sze put aside her violin.
“I was just enjoying the music.”
“Oh, you like classical music too, I suppose?”
“Are you kidding? I love classical music, especially violin pieces.”
“Do you play?”
“No, never did, but I knew someone that did," she paused. "How long have you been playing?” She came and sat down next to Ah Sze.
“Not a long time. I started last summer.”
“Wow, for a short amount of time, you’re pretty good.”
Ah Sze blushed, “thanks.”
“Why did you start so late?”
“I never thought I would play the violin. I learned from my dad that my mom used to play. I wanted to play my dad’s favorite song to surprise him, but then I discovered that I actually enjoyed it so I continued taking lessons.”
“That’s sweet of you. I could only wish for an opportunity like that.” Ah Sze began putting the violin back into its case. “Ah Sze, can I ask you for a favor?”
“Sure, if it’s something that I can do, I will not hesitate to do it.”
“You see, I don’t know how long I’m going to be staying in Hong Kong. I’ll probably be here for a long time so I…”
“Don’t worry you can stay here as long as you need to.”
“No it’s not that…I mean of course I appreciate it very much…I really do, but I was thinking of getting job.”
“A job?”
“Yes, I don’t want to have to rely on you guys for everything you know? I want to be independent.”
“Well, I guess earning some money isn’t a bad idea. You must be bored out of your mind always staying inside the apartment. You have my support.”
“Thanks, but the favor I want to ask you is, can you ask Alan to see if there’s a position for me at the mall? I know he’s a top executive there and everything and you know why I don’t want to ask him myself.” She sped through her lines.
“Whoa, slow down. I’m not going anywhere. Let me get this straight, you want to work at the mall and you want me to ask Alan to find an opening for you?”
“Yes.”
“Okay. I’ll try, but I can’t guarantee anything.”
“Thank you so much.” She gave Ah Sze a hug.
---------------------------
“Hey bro,” Ah Lik slapped Alan on the back.
He turned his head, “Hey Ah Lik.”
“Heard your vacation was cut short.”
“Yeah, you heard right.” The elevator door opened and they stepped inside.
“So how are you and ‘Ah So (sister-in-law)’?”
“We’re doing fine.”
“I’ve missed you guys so much. How about dinner tomorrow night? My treat.”
“Since you’re treating, how can I say no?”
“Great! It’ll be just like old times.” The elevator door opened and they exit.
-------------------------------------
Alan was taking a shower when the water suddenly got cold. He stepped away from the shower head.
“Sorry I’m using the sink. I’m brushing my teeth. Almost done.” Ah Sze rinsed her mouth.
“Oh yeah, I forgot to tell you. Have you made any plans for tomorrow night?” He shouted over the noise of the running water.
She spit out the water. “No, why?” The water was warm again and Alan continued washing his hair.
“Ah Lik wants to treat us for dinner tomorrow.”
“Oh, that’s great. If he hadn’t invited us, I think I would have planned a get-together myself.” She dried her face and hands and started to head out.
“After you get out, shut the door please.”
“Don’t worry I will.” When she was out of the bathroom she shut the door.
Ten minutes later, Alan came out of the shower. He grabbed a fresh towel and dried his hair. He looked through the pile of clothing he had set aside to wear after he showered, but found out he was missing his shirt and pants. He put on his boxers and stepped out of the bathroom. “Honey have you seen my clothes?” Little did he know, the person he expected to be there was not and the one he never expected was. When Man Gwan saw him with only his boxers on she screamed and shut her eyes. He quickly grabbed a towel and covered himself. Ah Sze raced into the room to see what the commotion was all about.
“What are you doing running around without your clothes on?”
“I can’t find my shirt or pants. I didn’t know she was in here.” She quickly went into the closet and grabbed his shirt and pants.
“Here,” she tossed him his clothes. He caught them and went back into the bathroom.
“Is he gone,” asked a still terrified Man Gwan.
“Yes, you can open your eyes now. Was it really that scary?”
“Of course you wouldn’t be scared, you’re his wife, but that was the first time I’ve ever seen a naked man in my life,” she said breathing heavily.
“He wasn’t completely naked.”
“Still…”
“Do you need some water to help calm you down?”
“No, I’ll be fine.” She tried catching her breath. “I think I’ll go back to my room now.” She ran back to her room and slammed the door shut.
Alan emerged from the bathroom now fully clothed. “What was she doing in here anyways?”
“She wanted to borrow some nail polish. So I let her in to choose the colors.”
“She really didn’t see anything, yet she acted like she saw some sort of monster, but I know someone who appreciates it,” he smirked and kissed Ah Sze on the cheeks.
Ah Sze rolled her eyes, “Oh shut up.”
“You know it’s true.”
“Right…" She raised an eyebrow. "Moving on...can you do me a favor?”
“Of course, I’m all yours,” he joked.
“I’m being serious. Can you see if there’s a small position available at the mall?”
“Why? Are you planning on working again?” His face turned serious.
“No, it’s not for me, it’s for Man Gwan.”
“Man Gwan? She wants to work?”
“Yeah, she wants to become independent so she wouldn’t have to rely on us all the time.”
“She said that,” he said in disbelief. Ah Sze nodded.
“Please help her out. If you want her to stop ‘leeching,’ then you've got to give her a chance to make a living for herself.”
“Alright, but I’m only doing this for you.”
