Charmaine sat on her porch, waiting for the sun to rise. It was only 6:22 a.m., but she couldn’t sleep after her all-night conversation with Chilam. Baffled thoughts plagued her mind.
So, he’s always aggressive…and loud...because his mother deserted him when he was younger? Charmaine questioned mentally. It was all so confusing. If his father was so poor, then…then how did Kevin manage to pay for the Blue Devils? Then there was Chilam… He was so nice and
thoughtful. He even purposely lost the race at the ice cream parlour because he didn’t want Kevin to pay…and he puts up with all of Kevin’s…comments.
Thinking of the qualities Chilam had, Charmaine’s face glimmered with her delicate smile. Coincidentally, the sun began to rise at the same time.

At rehearsal, the following Tuesday (the Blue Devils had Monday off after their time-consuming weekend), Charmaine was a bit late because her car wouldn’t start properly.
Walking quickly through the band room, she grabbed her trumpet case and music out of her locker. As she scrambled towards the auditorium, she was relieved that most of the members were still setting up. Searching for the trumpet section, her eyes fell on Kevin because he was in a deep embrace with a girl from the colorguard section. Her eyes left the hugging pair and finally found her fellow trumpet players.
Once she finished setting up, she thought about Kevin and the girl. She felt…odd about it. Could she actually have been jealous about someone she didn’t even have feelings for? No, she determined…it was…pride... The fact was that no one had a special interest in her…
Her reverie was interrupted by Chilam’s arrival on the podium. Raising his hands to get everyone’s attention and play a chord to warm-up, Chilam offered a slight smile to Charmaine.
Not being able to help herself, she grinned widely to reciprocate the greeting. In fact, her excited smile caused her to have a late entrance for the chord. But it didn’t matter to her, because Chilam’s dimpled smile had pushed away her previous thought, it wasn't as important as Chilam...

Immediately after rehearsal, Charmaine tried to track down Kevin. Perhaps it was impulse, but within the four-hour rehearsal period, she had decided that something wasn’t right with her relationship to Kevin and that it had to be changed.
After she put away her instrument, she quickly found Kevin in the tuba room, talking to a baritone player. The two were affectionate towards each other, because Kevin had his arm around the girl’s shoulder and she had her hand around his waist.
“Sorry, can I talk to Kevin real quick?” Charmaine asked, trying to be as polite as possible.
“I’ll talk to you later, a’ight, Jen?” Kevin offered, with a smile to the girl, apparently named Jen.
Giving Kevin a look before she left, Jen walked out of the room slowly, making sure to swing her hips as much as possible.
“What’s up? What do you need to talk to me about?” Kevin sat on the tuba case.
“See, I think that maybe we’re…um…” Charmaine trailed off for a second. She’d never done this before and she was unsure about what to say. Thinking of the sunrise earlier that week, she gained courage to continue.
“I think that…er…that we are better as just friends, you know? I think you agree, right? I mean, we really don’t have anything to talk about as…anything other than friends.” Charmaine was faulty at first but gained confidence with each word.
“Oh…sure, why not? I mean, if it’s something important enough, we’ll figure it out right?” Kevin appeared slightly hurt as he hopped off the tuba case.
“But still friends, right?” Kevin asked as he approached her, bringing his arms up slowly as he spoke, as though to give her a hug.
Charmaine, well-aware of his tendencies now, felt that she didn't have that need to indulge his desires (or anyone's for that matter) any longer, and quickly spun on her heel.
“Of course we’re friends. Later!” she called out, as she left the room.
