Appearing undaunted the next day, Kevin chatted easily with almost every girl in the band and colorguard. Kevin attracted hordes of people as he lifted his 50-pound tuba with one hand. But at lunch, he hid away by isolating himself in the tuba room
He didn’t understand himself sometimes. Meditating on what had happened he felt baffled. It’s not like I wanted anything other than to…seize and conquer…right? Kevin asked himself. But then, why do I feel miserable?
It’s ‘cause everyone leaves you, freak. Kevin heard a rather violent voice echo in his head.
Anger fumed within him. And so, like he frequently did when anger consumed him, he found an empty tuba case and began punching it, relentlessly. Despite bruised knuckles and numb fists, he persisted. He stopped ten minutes later.
Feeling exhausted, he threw himself on the floor, sprawled on the fuzzy carpet. He couldn’t sleep however, and lay there, staring at the ceiling.

Chilam returned from the lunch break half an hour early, so that he could clean up the band room. He wasn’t looking forward to tackling the ever-messy colorguard and tuba rooms, but he was drum major after all, and he had his responsibilities.
Deciding to clean up the worst room first, Chilam headed towards the tuba room. When he opened the door, he was surprised to see Kevin lying there, stuck in a daze.
“Uh…hey,” Chilam greeted warmly as he walked in. He wasn’t sure how to react to Kevin’s rather predictable moodiness.
“Hey, loser! ” Kevin spoke animatedly, ignoring the how caustic the phrase might've been.
Chilam sat down, leaned against the wall, and crossed his legs together. He waited in silence, because he knew Kevin’s tactics well-enough to know that Kevin would begin his monologue soon.
“She broke up with me.” Kevin stated matter-of-factly. “Me…isn’t that funny? The one notorious for dating-and-ditching like the day after… I mean, she broke up with me…and I was shocked! ‘guess I shouldn’t have been like that, but it’s not like I wasn’t planning on dropping her like yesterday’s trash anyways…but I don’t know…she’s the first one in a while that…reminded me what it feels like to be…left...like deserted.”
Chilam was silent. Even though her name was never said, Chilam knew it was Charmaine. And that was his main concern right then. He wanted to focus on the fact that Charmaine wasn’t dating Kevin anymore and that it may have happened just because of what he said on the bus. But he had to offer solace first. After all, he felt compelled to offer solace to Kevin, even if Kevin wasn’t the best of people.
“I know what you mean. But, it’ll be a’ight. She didn’t leave you just because you know… circumstances much more than people make the circumstances you know?” Chilam offered his sagacious words as he referred to Kevin’s mother, the deeper issue of the conversation, rather than Charmaine.
Chilam waited as the words sunk in and Kevin, seemed to be slightly encouraged to have someone understand him, beyond the words that he said.
“Thanks, you shrink-wanna-be,” Kevin joshed as he tried to change the subject. “Come to think of it, you’ve listened to my crappy life since I’ve known you, huh?”
“Eh, don’t say ‘thanks’ crazy, just give me 500 bucks.” Chilam retorted quickly.
“Seriously though, I don’t mind. Ever since you told me about your mom and stuff...it’s been my duty,” Chilam continued to joke as he looked off into the distance, dripping in melodrama.
“You are such a dork…no wonder you’ve never had a girlfriend,” Kevin playfully insulted.
Knowing that Kevin needed the company still, Chilam decided that he could wait to clean up the band room later. After all, college kids are slobs anyways so they wouldn’t mind. He spent the rest of the lunch break chatting with Kevin.
But, lingering in the back of his mind was the fact that Charmaine was no longer dating anyone.

As Charmaine was playing “Sandals of Froth”, the fast movement of “Field of Dreams”, she felt something was wrong. Chilam wasn’t like himself at all. He was conducting much faster than usual, almost at a frantic pace. Before the lunch break, he would stop and correct mistakes made, but now, he just ignored the mistakes, which were piling up because of the speed that he was conducting.
What was more remarkable was that, after playing for only twenty-minutes, he let the band have a fifteen-minute break. The band began to break off into small groups, chatting about the usual. Chilam had rushed off towards his office and closed the door. Charmaine casually walked by his office, to try and catch a glimpse of what Chilam was doing.
Kevin was sitting in his seat, with a small group of girls surrounding him.
“Ooh, someone’s probably planning a hot date…” Kevin remarked loudly, trying to stir up some gossip among the colorguard.
“Yeah? That's disappointing. He has those really cute dimples...” the girl named Jen said softly.
“What? So are you saying he’s cuter than me…?” Kevin flirted apparently.
Charmaine suddenly felt a sensation like anger tingle in her chest. Was this the ‘jealousy’ made infamous in novels?

pretty easy to figure out who the jealousy is about, yeah? =D, if anyone's reading, thanx!
