After the break, Chilam ordered the band to split into sectionals until the 3:00 p.m. and then they could go home and pack for the trip on Saturday.
When most were settled into their respective groups, Chilam went back to his office to get his notebook. He ripped out a piece of paper with writing on it and then walked out of the band room.
Scanning the parking lot for the silver Matrix, Chilam noticed the car parked beside a bush of yellow calla lilies. He smiled at the opportune encounter. Relishing his good fortunes, he walked over to the car and then wrote a post-script on the notebook paper. As gingerly as possible, he bent down to pick a calla lily and then he pinned the items under the windshield on the driver’s side.
Feeling rather at ease now, Chilam returned to the band room. Although still pleased to fine the calla lilies, he inwardly reproached himself for being such a fidgety fool earlier.

Charmaine tried to be cheerful. She tried to think about her brother, her mother, the comforting sea, even the miniscule things, like the sunrise she watched the other day. But, inevitably, her mind returned to him.
Her quest for jovial thoughts of foam and mist, basically intangible ideas that would ultimately lead her back to where she began, consumed her. Rather uncharacteristic of her, Charmaine mechanically walked out of the band room and entered her car. Any other day, she would have taken her time, mentally commented on the odd-shape of a cloud, or look at the flowers adorning the parking lot, but the thoughts about him were too much.
Charmaine just opened the door of her Matrix, sat down, buckled her seatbelt, and turned the engine on like an automaton.

Chilam tried to find a place to stand to watch her reaction when she read the letter, but there wasn’t any place that wouldn’t have made him look like an idiot. After all, normal people don’t stand behind maple trees or lilac bushes observing others very often, at least we would hope
they didn’t.
Left with no other choice really, he decided to stand outside the band room. He could then verify if she really read the letter or not. Not according to plan, Charmaine completely ignored the letter and turned on the engine. She was pulling out of the parking lot.
He tried to run towards the car and tell her about the letter, but he stopped himself. He didn’t really need to run after all; it was pointless anyways.
Most of the cars were in a queue because there were so many cars trying to get out of the parking lot. Regaining his composure, Chilam walked towards the silver Matrix and tapped on her window. He smiled in his usual, friendly manner.
“Oh…hey!” Charmaine greeted as she rolled down her window.
“I figured you’d find it, but guess not, so here ya go…” Chilam reached for the letter and lily.
“Oh, what is it?” Charmaine muttered softly.
As Charmaine unfolded the letter, Chilam felt slightly nervous and rubbed the back of his neck. He laughed at himself softly as he recalled what he had just been doing.
Seeing Charmaine look up at him questioningly, he then explained.
“I…ha…I felt really stupid earlier…I wanted to make sure you got the letter, but I didn’t know where to stand and stuff…for a
moment, I figured out what a stalker must feel like…”
Smiling to herself, Charmaine perused the contents quickly.
Hey, Charmaine. I heard about what happened with you and Kevin... I hope everything’s okay… Anywho, you remember when I told you I had another reason to why I didn’t think you should be with Kevin? Well, if you still want to talk about it, give me a ring, 588-0853.
-Chilam
p.s.: I was just gonna put this on your windshield but then I noticed these calla lilies around your car, so a small token of my constant…friendship for you. (Calla lilies represent a majestic beauty and yellow symbolizes friendship, so hope our friendship become…better.) =D
“Thanks! It was super sweet of you,” Charmaine beamed. She was suddenly very uplifted.
“Don’t mention it.” Chilam smiled, then added a wink, and headed towards to the band room.
Chilam’s unexpected gift left Charmaine very confused. She could only look at the calla lily and Chilam’s departing figure. She wasn’t sure of much, except a growing feeling of joy. Suddenly she heard chaotic honks. Shaken out of her reverie, she realized she was holding up the line by not driving. Stuffing the letter into her pocket, she wasn’t annoyed at the honks, but was rather cheerful.
