Chapter 15

of Clouds in the sea, of Islands of mist.

Chilam arrived at A & M university thirty minutes before he usually did. It wasn’t work related as usual, but there was still something very important for him to do.

He knew the school planted lilies, but he usually only saw yellow and red ones. But he could have sworn that he saw orange lilies on the day of orientation. Where were they?
Jogging through the gigantic campus, he ran from planter to planter, hoping to find those lilies again. After a good ten minutes of searching, Chilam’s grey t-shirt was drenched in sweat. He couldn’t find them.

Feeling rather disappointed, he headed towards the restroom to wash his face. To his surprise, he found a planter beside the restroom with blooming, orange liles; just what he needed. After washing his face, he ran out and picked a bouquet of flowers. Now, there was just the wait left.

Charmaine pulled her Matrix into the campus parking lot. She was a little later than usual so all the good parking spots were taken. Charmaine breathed deeply as she began her rather long walk towards the band room. It was a nice day and the breeze was definitely refreshing.

Looking towards the band room, she noticed a tall figure pacing beside the planters and bushes. He looked familiar, but Charmaine’s sight was a little less than perfect, so she couldn’t distinguish who it was exactly. Ok, it was a lot less than perfect because she was reading all the time, but she but she just couldn’t stand glasses, so she never wore any.

As she neared the figure, she noticed it was Chilam. She waved jovially.

“Hey, there, you… I…” Charmaine greeted Chilam brightly. He returned the cheerful smile. She thought about telling him about the phone call, but she was worried that he would say he was avoiding her or something. Her voice just trailed off, but he still hadn’t spoken.

“What’s this?” Charmaine gestured towards the bouquet of flowers lying on the cement planter. She secretly hoped it was for her…maybe…if she was lucky enough…

“Good segue way…” Chilam spoke for the first time that morning. “I…uh…don’t know if you tried calling me yesterday or not, but I figured it’d be better if I told you this face-to-face, so I had turned off my phone. Hope you didn’t mind.”

Chilam gauged Charmaine for a reaction. But she just blinked so he decided to continue.

“See, I was hoping that you would want to go out with me this Friday? I know we have a performance on Saturday, but I promise I won’t tire you out with anything crazy, and you don’t even hafta plan anything…” Chilam looked at Charmaine anxiously, waiting for an answer.

“I—I’d love to…it’d be great actually…but I still don’t understand…umm…what was…er…with th-the letter yesterday…”Charmaine felt very inarticulate.

“Oh, that… I wanted to tell you that I had had a crush on you before the end of band camp, but then Kevin was talking about dating you so, that kinda killed my hope… and I thought about telling you outright but couldn’t I felt it would be…kinda wrong because he is a friend…so I guess that’s why I stole Dostoevsky’s stuff… hope it’s not a copyright infringement,” Chilam joked at the end. He felt a lot more relaxed. Maybe that was why he was talking so much.

Glancing down at this watch, he noticed the bouquet of flowers.

“Oh, I almost forgot, here ya go,” Chilam picked up the lilies and handed to Charmaine.

“Thanks, they’re lovely. Calla lilies represent…a belle, right? A great beauty?” Charmaine asked as she reached for gift.

“Yeah, you remembered, good. And orange symbolizes ‘hope’.” Chilam looked at his worn converses for a second. “Hope that Friday will be stellar like the stars and that our friendship will be swell like the ocean.”

Charmaine beamed to hear him say that. “That’s sweet, but you know, I think you are infringing on a copyright.”

“Huh? What are you talking about?” Chilam looked confused about the joke.

“ ‘Stellar like the stars’? ‘Swell like the ocean’? Those are my phrases!” Charmaine joshed good-humoredly.

“No way! Those are my signature phrases…” Chilam said defensively.

“Well, you’re the one who’s always stealing stuff…” Charmaine reminded him, as she raised an eyebrow.

“If you’re already accusing me of plagiarism, might as well forget about being orginal…” Chilam ran towards Charmaine and began tickling her. Not to be outdone, she tickled him back, excited to find that he was just as ticklish as she was.

“I’m not losing this fight!” Charmaine squealed as she intensified her tickling.

The two, who were normally very mature and composed people, were acting like four-year-olds. Fighting, actual fighting, seemed to be more appealing to both.
