Chapter 16

Swallow the cloth of fear,

~*~

“Oh, hey, I’m sorry, but I don’t think I can go…something’s come up…and…err…it’s really important,” Charmaine practiced in front of her mirror. She couldn’t believe it was Friday already. She couldn’t do this…how could she go? It was going to be her first date and undoubtedly, she was going to screw it up.

In the midst of her practicing, her cell phone rang. She
looked at the screen...

“Hello?” Charmaine asked in genuine interest because she didn’t recognize the number.

“Hey, it’s Chilam! I’m at home right now and I just remembered something very important…please bring your trumpet today. And if it’s all right, I’ll be by to pick you up around 10:30ish. Sorry it’s kinda early, but I wanna give you enough time tonight to rest up for tomorrow.” It seemed very well-rehearsed.

She wasn’t sure if she could say it anymore. But she had to; it was the only opportunity left.

“Err…umm…” Charmaine sighed into the phone. This was going to be her first actual date in her 19 years of existence, and she…she was going to screw it up.

“Is everything all right?” Chilam asked, sounding worried. “If not, we can just not go…it’s all right.”

Hearing his reassurance and his genuine concern, she changed her mind. She didn’t need to say it anymore, because…there’s a first for everything and even if she did screw up miserably…it’d be better to screw up with someone kind like him than someone else…

“uhh…I was just…um…unsure about what to wear because you haven’t told me about what we’re doing…” Charmaine finally managed to muster enough words to articulate.

“Just…just be comfortable and I promise we’re not doing anything too crazy. Bye!”

Did he have everything? It’d be crazy stupid to have to return half way through the date just to pick up something…. Wait, what was the time? Hmm…10:03. It’d be even more moronic if he was late…

Chilam seemed flustered. It wasn’t like it was his first date…why was he doing this? But he made up his mind to try. It’d been a while since he’d gone out with anyone.

So, after checking his trunk a fifth time, he straightened his gray t-shirt and prepared to drive away and pick her up.

Applying a touch of light make-up, she looked at herself in the mirror. This was odd… She rarely used make-up and its presence on her delicate features made her feel…different.

Glancing down at her flowing white skirt and Hawaiian green tank top, she suddenly felt nervous and walked towards the kitchen to get a bottle of water…

She glanced at her watch: 10:17. What was she going to do for 13 minutes? The roses in front of her house were in full bloom, she noted, and walked out to observe them carefully.

What was Chilam’s car doing… Was that he already? She laughed softly as she walked towards his car.

“Hey! Aren’t you an early bird?” Charmaine commented.
Chilam appeared surprised. “Hi…” He glanced at his watch. “Here, I want to do this right…if you don’t mind, do you want to go grab your trumpet and then we can start this date properly?”

Charmaine’s felt her lips curve into a smile as she returned to her house.
