There was...something. She couldn’t decide what… Perhaps it was where they were. Or maybe it was what they were doing… or, probably closer to the truth, it was the fact that she was with him…
Wailing on her trumpet as though there were no tomorrow, Charmaine felt ensconced in the music. Hearing Chilam’s dulcet voice crooning to the anxious audience, she was enveloped by him.
Who knew he was such a benevolent, altruistic, and creative guy? Playing at a nursing home for a date? That was something else; even for a girl who had never been on a date, she knew it was something else.
As he finished singing the last words to “Fascination” originally sung by Nat King Cole, Chilam side glanced Charmaine and sent her an impish wink. She felt her cheeks flare with the warmth of affection, perhaps, borderline adoration. She didn’t know if she could stand it…
But stand it she did, and what was more, Charmaine withstood the tingle that coursed through her when Chilam took her hand for the bow.
Charmaine serious doubted if her face would ever return to its normal complexion…

Perhaps it was love, perhaps not. It didn’t matter to Charmaine anymore. The mere fact that she had the opportunity to know such a swell-like-the-ocean guy was enough for her.
Seeing Chilam talking with the elderly patients at Emmnanual Park Nursing Home, she was certain that she was blessed enough to know him. He tried to so hard to make them laugh and was ever-the-adept listener when they told tales of tumultuous times and even when they couldn’t remember what came next, he listened, he cared, he…he was the Chilam that fascinated her through it all.
Chilam was likewise impressed. He knew it was risky to take a girl to a nursing home for a first date, or any date for that matter, because most girls were too caught up with the stereotypical romantic dates: the strolls on the beach, the candlelit dinners, the $3000 shopping sprees that didn’t even come close to solving her shoe fetish…
But Charmaine was cute… he could see the way her eyes lit with delight at the patients’ enjoyment of the music, the way her lips curled when Evelyn would gush about how cute Chilam and Charmaine were together, the way the orbs danced on her cheeks every time Paul would tell a corny joke. She liked to be here. And he liked her for it. Perhaps enough to even give her his first kiss.
They concluded their date with a hand-in-nervous-hand walk around Almond Grove Park. Although shaky at first, Charmaine steadily decided that she enjoyed being with Chilam, relished the comfort that he gave her, adored the honesty that he exuded. There were no words necessary for what they felt because their emotions had confirmed it all.
Glancing around, Chilam noticed two little children, probably around the age of scraped knees, sun-bleached hair, and kiss-away-boo-boos, sitting beside the lake, feet dangling in the water and all. Both Charmaine and Chilam felt an inexplicable force pull them to watch the scene.
“Jacob, I dink there’s a boogeyman under in this water …” a rosy-cheeked girl said out of the blue.
“No worries, Lily. I’ll keep you safe!” Jacob bulged out his chest and placed his hands on his hips, imitating Superman.
Not to be outdone, Lily giggled softly and then bestowed a kiss on Jacob’s cheek.
As to be expected, Lily and Jacob’s cheeks alighted with little orbs of embarrassment before Jacob flung himself upright and ran away, screaming of the “cooties” that he had been infected with.
Yet, watching the scene, Charmaine felt excessive warmth in her face as well. Staring at her shoes, she felt quite belittled over something that didn’t even involve her. What was she? A fourteen year old school girl or something? No, she was worse, she was a nineteen year old college student on her first date…
Side-glancing Charmaine, Chilam felt his heart flutter at the sight of the rosy orbs billowing over her milky white, satin skin, the fan-like curve of her long lashes, the full buds of her lips…
Shakily stretching his hand to lift her face up towards his, he felt even more ensconced in Charmaine as he gazed into her gentle, benevolent spheres of chestnut brown eyes, guarded by soft, long lashes.
“C—err...M—umm…” He silently cursed himself for being so inarticulate. Maybe they should just be friends… or no, he should just go for a run right now… excuse himself and go for a run around the park…
Yet his thoughts vanished and the entire world ceased to exist as Charmaine captured his soft full lips with her own. His response required no thought. Returning her gentle pecks with fervent kisses, both felt the rush of emotions that had been made infamous in silent movies, romance novels, and recently at winglin fanfiction sites. As the two entwined, Charmaine could feel the gentle pressure of his hand on the small of her back, the tickle of his hair on her forehead, and it seemed as though every sensation in her body had been heightened.
Releasing each other from their firm grasp, they continued to gaze at each other, wide grins adorning their now blushing faces.
Chilam felt confirmation that he had been right, that in saving his first kiss, he had been well rewarded. After all, not only was his first kiss special, it was… perfect. Everything that he could have wanted, and possibly more.
Likewise, Charmaine was jovial over the fact that all had ended well. Although it wasn’t her official first kiss, it was the first kiss that she had bestowed to anyone and the sheer vitality that it gave her was enough to engrave it into her mind, for all of eternity.
Returning to reality, the two resumed walking, hand-in-hand. Smiles adorning their jovial faces, they knew whatever the outcome of the relationship would be, it was enough. It was sufficient: it was enough that they had known each other and it was enough to teach them that they could love over friendship, and what was more… they could choose to fight over flight.
