“Ok, devils… we don’t believe in individual tuning… this isn’t your high school band. You’ve all got ears so learn to use them.” Chilam admonished to the group.
He looks really strict… I probably should have figured that out when he did that whole “don’t be late” spiel…but he doesn’t seem too bad…and at least he’s serious. Charmaine was staring at Chilam, pondering at trivial matters when she heard the dulcet tones of an F, D, Bb melding together. Regaining her grasp on reality, she realized the drum major was glaring at her. She fumbled to bring her trumpet to her lips but just as she set her lips in the mouthpiece and took a breath, Chilam cut the band off.
With a firm tone of voice, he commanded, “Be attentive. That’s fundamental to a good band. It’s not the group that has the best tone or--”
“Although that would definitely be us!” Kevin interjected from the back of the room.
Chilam forced a smile and then resumed. “It’s which group can stay together and work together the best.” Seeing the late girl look down at her peace-sign emblem Converses and fidgeting, Chilam stopped his lecturing and moved on to the music.
Charmaine, who had stopped twiddling her thumbs and tucking her bangs into behind her ears, leaned back into the cold, rigid chair, and closed her eyes briefly. Within the course of an hour since she stepped onto the campus of Texas A&M, she had felt overwhelmingly exhausted.

After about half an hour of non-stop rehearsal, Chilam put his baton onto the music stand and walked off the podium.
Relaxing a little and changing his voice to a more conversational rather than formal tone, he explained, “I started out in band as a percussionist but then I learned how to play trumpet because my director needed someone to fill the spot on the field. So I know what it feels like to play for thirty minutes straight and feel like an eternity has passed. You know, like how your lips feel all numb and tingly. So to give some time for us to just rest… let’s get to know each other a bit better all right?”
Kevin, quickly stood up and walked up to Chilam. The expression on Chilam’s face however, betrayed the fact that Kevin’s assertiveness was definitely unplanned.
Putting his arm around Chilam’s shoulder, Kevin cheerfully informed everyone, “Hey, guys…and of course, ladies!” He added in a nod towards Charmaine. “I’ve known Chilam for a while, and I could tell me wanted me to help out a bit. I mean, he’s been up here flailing his arms for awhile, so I’m just gonna explain.”
Chilam attempted to get a word in, but couldn’t because Kevin didn’t heed any attention to his so-called “friend.”
“First, take off your shoe. Yes, your shoe. Come on, Joe even cute little Charmaine over here, who’s a new-comer is following along.” Kevin persuaded the reluctant cornet player.
“Now, throw it into the center of the room. I promise you’ll get your shoe back, don’t worry about it.” Kevin continued. Once all the shoes landed in the center of the room, Kevin’s voice boomed yet again. “Ok, good. Just go find a shoe in the pile, that’s not yours, and go find the owner of the shoe.”
Finding this the opportune time to interject, Chilam spoke up, “And you want to learn as many names as possible, because whoever learns the most nam--”
Again, Kevin interrupted Chilam. “Will get a date with me…” Kevin offered with a sly smile.
Slightly frustrated, Chilam replied with, “That wouldn’t be a prize; it’d be a punishment.” Realizing what he just said, he tried to cover it up with a laugh and fortunately most of the band laughed along. “Just kidding. Whoever learns the most names will get 2 free movie tickets and…the first choice of seats for the rest of the bus trips of the summer…”

Huh? Shoes…? Kevin’s creative… that’s a good thing…wait, stop! Charmaine reprimanded herself. Just think of last year’s incident and avoid this whole issue…
