~*~continued from last chapter~*~
Huh? Shoes…? Kevin’s creative… that’s a good thing…wait, stop! Charmaine reprimanded herself. Just think of last year’s incident and avoid this whole issue…
~Flashback~
Jeff smiled brightly in Charmaine’s direction. She immediately felt that perhaps she was claustrophobic and that all her parent’s tax money was going to waste because the classroom was way, way too warm.
So…maybe, just maybe that’s why he’s been so nice to me lately. I mean, when he picked up my pencil in chem…he’s walking OVER!! He’s going to ask me to the senior dance isn’t he?!? I wish that group of girls would just be quiet already! They’re ruining the moment, Charmaine thought vehemently to herself.
In his casual, yet composed manner, Jeff headed towards the band lockers where Charmaine was standing. He looked straight forward as though he had a well-laid out plan and knew exactly what he intended to do. Charmaine just stood beside her locker, number 214 and pretended to open her locker. Out of the corner of her eye, she noted that Jeff was only a couple of steps away…
“So, can I ask you a question?” Charmaine heard Jeff’s baritone voice ask softly.
Looking up immediately, with a demure smile on her face, she was quickly disappointed. Jeff wasn’t talking to her, but to Rhilee, the popular cheerleader in the center of the clique that had decided to congregate around Charmaine’s locker.
~End Flashback~
As Kevin smiled and approached her, Charmaine turned swiftly around, grabbed a random shoe, and started her quest.

After the grueling first practice ended, Chilam surveyed his new-found band mates. Seeing that Charmaine was standing by herself, he walked over. With a sincerely warm smile, Chilam shook her hand and handed a $20 coupon to Edwards Theatres to her with the other hand.
Charmaine opened her mouth to speak, presumably to say “thank you,” but she stopped when she suddenly felt someone’s arm around her shoulder. Looking over to her right, she saw Kevin. Feeling slightly uncomfortable by his presumptuousness, she smiled ackwardly towards Chilam.
“Hey, how about that ice cream I promised you? You wanna go now? I have been whippin’ you devils pretty hard today…” Chilam tried to rescue her from Kevin.
“Yeah, how ‘bout it? I’ll come, too, so you don’t hafta be stuck with Mr. Serious here.” Kevin interrupted.
“Sure, why not?” Charmaine agreed. “But I need to get something out of my locker first. See you guys at Dewars?”
~*~
“Hey, Chilam, you wanna race to Dewars?” Kevin suggested once they were in the parking lot. “Loser has to pay!”
“Come on, it’s dangerous to race in a parking lot and how old are you anyways?” Chilam said, the first half seriously and the second casually, as he locked the door to his car.
“You’re just afraid…aren’t ya?” Kevin taunted deliberately.
Shaking his head and laughing, he agreed. Once he took off, Chilam was obviously a faster runner than Kevin, after all, his years in track wasn’t all for naught. But as he approached the door of the store, he deliberately pretended to trip on the curb of the sidewalk. Kevin, thinking of his lucky break, ran towards the door and made some celebratory yells, while Chilam just leaned against a pillar and smiled. Charmaine, who had been watching this all along, started to walk towards them and saw that Kevin opened his arms, as though expecting a congratulatory hug. Charmaine evaded it by turning to Chilam.
“So, that piece that we’re playing, “Field of Dreams” by Julian Chandler, it said that you arranged it?” Charmaine questioned as Chilam opened the door to Dewars for them.
“Yeah, I had a little spare time…and when we were thinking of a show theme, it just seemed to fit in really well.” Chilam replied as the three sat down at a table beside the fountain.
“Don’t hide it from her like you’re ashamed or something, Chilam. Julian Chandler is his alias, he actually wrote “Field of Dreams.” Kevin revealed as he reached over for the menu that the waitress just dropped on the table.
See Chilam’s evasive manner as he grabbed a menu as well, Charmaine didn’t want to pry for information she wasn’t privy to, but she just felt this weird curiousity that she couldn’t suppress.
“If you don’t mind me asking, where did inspiration for the song come from? ‘Cause I think it’s…” Charmaine trailed off for a second as she struggled to find the right word. “it’s…um…it’s a lovely melody and I just wanted to know what triggered it.”
Seeing Chilam’s reluctance as he pretended to look over the menu, Charmaine added, “And I think it would help me play the song better, especially the trumpet solo, if I could understand what the song is about more.”
After interjecting that phrase, Charmaine felt odd because she was indeed very curious about this matter and she usually was very nonchalant about other people’s affairs.
“I guess, if it’d help you then I’ll tell you.” Chilam said slightly reluctant. “A couple of years back, I was in Ireland… and I, like any other teenager, didn’t really feel like I fit anywhere. But when I looked on this far off, rising out island: I just felt like crazy emotion about the green pillar, crowned in mist, robed in the Caspion sea, with sandals of froth, and fish caught in His homes below. I guess I felt like a child hearing good things…of evil things defeated… it made me optimistic in the midst of sadness. Like a person in a sunset, and a bird in a tree… “
As Chilam explained, Charmaine found herself quite impressed with his eloquence. She just smiled at him softly.
“So, whatcha guys gonna order?” Chilam asked as he noticed Charmaine looking at him differently.
