Charmaine sat by herself at the far end of the park, adjacent to Oxnard Beach. Hugging her knees, she just watched the waves and closed her eyes.
I wonder if Chilam’s waken up yet... he probably hasn’t eaten yet…But Charmaine’s meditation was quickly interrupted by a tap on her shoulder.
“I’m back!” Kevin said, as he bent down to side-hug her. Charmaine just looked towards the beach, at the regular rhythm of the waves.
“I got us some food, but I wasn’t sure what you liked, so I just got a little of everything…” Kevin explained as he opened up the picnic and the plates of food.
“Thanks…you didn’t hafta get so much, anything’s fine with me.” Charmaine helped him set-up.
After eating their lavish meal, Kevin led Charmaine down to the beach. There was a plaid blanket set up and a bouquet of red roses. Kevin bent down to pick them up.
“I hope you like them,” Kevin said as he handed Charmaine the bouquet.
“Thank you…it…it really wasn’t necessary,” Charmaine was unsure about what to say.
“I’ve got something to tell you…and I—I think I’ve tried to tell you before but…” Kevin’s voice had trailed off and he looked down at this shoes. He seemed nervous.
Trying to change the subject, Charmaine seized the opportune silence that had occurred as Kevin tried to gain courage.
“Isn’t the sunset pretty? It’s makes everything seem…surreal,” Charmaine muttered as she turned her head away from him.
“I think you’re pretty,” Kevin said, completely not worried about the degree of cheesiness and lack of originality.
As Charmaine stood, overcome with shock, Kevin leaned in and kissed her. It was an aggressive and forceful kiss.
“Umm...err…that was…odd,” Charmaine managed to say after regaining her composure from the highly unexpected kiss.
“That was your first kiss?” Kevin asked. When Charmaine didn’t respond, Kevin pulled her into a hug.
“I’m glad I was your first…” Kevin said softly, with a rather triumphant smile.
Not knowing what to do, with everything that had happened,
Charmaine just lightly put her arms around Kevin. Thinking over the kiss, Charmaine was surprised that it wasn’t the magical glory that most had spoken of when referring to their first kiss. In fact, Charmaine kind of didn’t feel anything, except for the physical contact.
