During the performance that night, Chilam was definitely distracted. Mentally, he was confused. Physically, his stomach was aching terribly. He knew he shouldn’t have eaten so quickly and so much. Fortunately, Chilam was ever the professional, and kept the beat perfectly. In conjunction with his good teaching techniques, the Blue Devils were able to win first place in their division as well as the music and marching sweepstakes.
Walking towards the bus, for the ride home, Chilam stopped several times to rest. Though normally very fit, he was very tired and his stomach pains were still there. He knew
why…but didn’t know if he should do anything about it.
By the time he made it to the bus, he felt like he could collapse onto the stairs. But ever the gentlemen, he allowed the drumline girls to walk onto the bus first, while he just crossed his arms across his chest, trying to stay balanced.
When he finally made it to his seat, he threw himself down, closed his eyes, and hoped that he could sleep the pain away, but to no avail because sleep would not come to him.

Kevin looked out of the fogged window beside his seat, when an idea came to him. He smiled to himself, and then glanced over at Charmaine. She was staring at her hands, involved with some mental quandary.
After writing a couple of words on the window, he tapped Charmaine’s shoulder.
Turning towards him, Charmaine read the words to herself: “You are very pretty”. Kevin then grabbed her delicate hand and engulfed it in his seemingly massive hand.
Still feeling uncomfortable around him, Charmaine tried to start a conversation.
“So, what’s your family like?” Charmaine asked, almost politely.
“Oh, they’re there.” Kevin was unusually subdued. Charmaine felt disappointed at his answer; after all, family was the only thing truly important to her.
“What’s yours like?” Kevin asked in return, trying to change the subject.
“Oh, they’re…stellar like the stars. And I know it’s weird I say that because that’s such a old saying, but they really are beyond description. My mom’s a chef for our family restaurant and she’s…amazing. Even when I was younger, she was really busy with the business, but she always supported me, even when I told her I wanted to study music… My younger brother, he’s a rock star… well, not really, but that’s how cool he is…most siblings fight a lot, but I don’t know, we just get along…” Charmaine rambled on about her family, as she looked off into the bus corridor. It was a subject for which she could talk for hours, but sensing, her loquaciousness, she was silent for a second.
“You probably aren’t used to me tal--” Charmaine ended mid-word when she saw that Kevin was asleep. While she was expounding on her family she wasn’t looking at him, and now glancing at him, he was off with Lucy in the Sky.
Having an idea, Charmaine gently pulled her hand away from
Kevin’s and stealthily left her seat. Taking quiet steps, she approached Chilam’s seat.
