Chapter 9

The 26th of July

Chapter Nine: The 26th of July

Hebe sat next to Jiro and Selina in her black plunge v-neck knot-front dress. She had questioned whether or not it made her seem a bit too flirty. After a long battle with herself she decided to put her favorite white wool sweater on. She had gotten the sweater from her childhood nanny as a present when her nanny had decided to retire. She buttoned up her sweater just as Rainie and Angela arrived. Rainie was holding hands with her boyfriend, Mike. She was in a crimson red mini open-back dress and matching stilettos. Angela stood next to her in a short silk dress. The creamy colors matched Angela's personality perfectly.

Hebe smiled at her friends and they waved back. Rainie whispered something into Mike's ear that caused him to break into a smile. Angela quickened her pace and gave Hebe a hug, taking a seat next to her.

"We haven't talked in so long!" Angela grinned at Hebe. Angela wasn't as close to Hebe as Rainie was but she was still someone Hebe could count on to bring her spirits up. Angela frowned as she flicked at Hebe's sweater. "You've got to be kidding me right? No way are you hiding your beautiful body under that stuffy thing." Hebe laughed at her friend but resisted unbuttoning her sweater.

Hebe picked up her glass of wine. "So, that's all the people coming right? Why'd you bring us here?" Ella shook her head.

"We have to wait for the others." Hebe raised her eye brows. More people? How many others were there? Hebe didn't have to wait long for her questions to be answered.

"Over here!" Jiro waved at a group that had just entered through the doors. Hebe's face became blank. There stood Aaron, Jaejoong, another guy she couldn't put a name on, and the girl that Jaejoong had kissed at the cafe. She was elegant in the royal purple halter bubble dress. Her hair was let down in loose curls, shaping her doll-like face nicely. Hebe's eyes glimpsed at Jaejoong to find him looking at her as well. She stared down at her plate, wishing this moment was just a dream.

"I'm serious Hebe, take that sweater off. You're ruining the whole look." Angela insisted, oblivious to Hebe's shaking hand. Too frozen to do anything, Hebe let Angela unbutton her sweater and leave her arms bare of warmth. "Is something wrong?"

Hebe shook her head. "I think I'll go to the ladies room." She whispered and walked towards the restrooms, her gold four inch heel stilettos echoing with her every step. When she reached the restroom she didn't know what to do. She felt as if she couldn't breathe. She took out her phone, texting to Ella. Midway through her text to call in sick, she closed her phone shut. Today was Selina's big day. Selina was so excited about it. She couldn't leave before Selina even announced her surprise. Hebe washed her hands and walked back to the table. People were talking to one another and didn't even seem to notice Hebe walking back, except for Rainie and Mike who were smiling at Hebe and whispering into each others' ears.

"What did I miss?" Hebe whispered to Angela who was digging in her salad. Angela shook her head and began eating again. Who knew such a skinny girl could eat so beastly?

Hebe ordered a bottle of champagne for the whole table. Just as the last empty glass was filled with champagne, and everyone's plate was filled, Selina stood up. She was in a peach colored T-back jersey dress. She seemed plain but her excitement made her shine like diamonds amongst them.

"Okay!" Selina cheered as she walked up to Hebe's side of the table. "This is angelic Angela, my baby sis Hebe, rocking chick Rainie, her boyfriend Mike, and my other lovable sis, Ella!" Selina introduced and sat back down in her seat after doing a little dance. Hebe laughed at her usually mature sister that was dancing away in excitement. She ushered Jiro up, who by now, was blushing red.

Jiro walked towards his friends and cleared his throat. "This is Chun the science geek, Ayumi the cutie, Aaron, and his brother Jaejoong." Jiro rushed at the end and was about to sit back down when Selina sent a stern look to him. "Yeah!" Jiro said unenthusiastically and did a little jig before sitting down and hiding his face. Everyone around the table laughed, except for Hebe of course.

She was still shocked after hearing Jiro's introduction. Not only did she discover that Jaejoong was going out with Aaron's former assistant who has a crush on him, but Jaejoong and Aaron are freakin' brothers! How come no one told her this? That would mean that she had a fling with the brother of her ex-boyfriend on the day they broke up. Hebe cursed herself. She had been such a b!tch.

-

Aaron sat in his chair awkwardly. Hebe looked so beautiful, but so pale. Today was her day off, ordered by her father. There was no reason to her break. She wouldn't tell and it probably wasn't his business anyways. He knew something was wrong. Her smiles looked so forced and strained. She looked like she was suffering so much, but no one else seemed to mind how she looked. They all thought she was beautiful, but he felt there was more she was hiding.

Hebe was hurting and hiding it all with a weak smile. He couldn't stand being in her dark presence. She looked too sad. He got up from his chair, apologizing to Jiro for not being able to stay any longer, as the others talked. Jiro patted him on the back and waved him goodbye.

The others didn't seem to notice his disappearance.

-

Jaejoong sat there fiddling with his soup. He couldn't help looking at Hebe. She looked stunning in that black dress, but her face looked so dull and sad. She hadn't come to work today because it was her day off. Aaron had told him that her father had ordered for her to stay home as long as she wanted for the rest of the month. You could see why now. She looked like a wreck, no matter how much she tried to hide it with her smile. Her eyes told it all.

Ayumi tapped him on the shoulders. "What's wrong?" Jaejoong shook his head. He didn't want to make her worry. Ayumi frowned.

"Tell me, or I'll kick your behind." Ayumi threatened. Jaejoong grinned.

"I'm really okay." Ayumi shook her head, unconvinced.

"I'm really going to kick you." Jaejoong sighed, looking back at Hebe. Ayumi followed his gaze. "So it's Ms. Tian?" Ayumi looked at him confused. "Why?"

"She's the girl I was talking about." Jaejoong said, his tone was dull and sad. Ayumi nodded her head as she stared at the pretty girl in the black dress.

"The girl that dumped you on the phone then had a fling the same night? That sl*t, right there?" Ayumi whispered harshly as she eyed Hebe. "Why the heck should you be sad for her? Please, you are too good for that kind of trash." Jaejoong shook his head.

"You don't know her. She's more than what people think." Jaejoong whispered back angrily. He didn't want people talking bad about Hebe even after what she did to him. Sure, he was angry at first, but now Hebe looked so pitiful. He hated the look on her face.

Jiro knocked his spoon against the glass cup. Everyone silenced and turned their attention towards Jiro. "Uh...hi?" They all laughed. Jiro was never good with audiences. "Well, there was a reason why we all called you guys over."

"Obviously." Chun said and rolled his eyes. Ella giggled and blushed when he winked at her. Chun was flirting! Never in his life had seen Chun act that way.

Selina stood up and took the glass away from Jiro. She shot a quick glare at Chun and Ella before clearing her throat and smiling again. "Okay!" She said in excitment as she clapped her hands. "Ta da!" Selina stuck out her fingers. On it was a sparkling ring that shined under the chandelier light. Hebe coughed, choking on her wine.

"Are you serious?" Angela screamed out and ran to hug Selina. "Oh my god! That's wonderful!" The two girls held hands, squealing in excitement. When Hebe had settled herself, she too, went running into Selina's arms and joined the squealing girls.

"Will you girls shut up and tell me when the wedding is?" Ella yelled out, a big smile plastered on her face.

"Oh, we aren't planning for that to happen until next year." Jiro explained.

"But isn't it just great?" Selina smiled. She looked like the happiest girl in the world. Jaejoong sighed. It was supposed to be a happy moment but he couldn't help thinking that Hebe would've been the one looking like that if he had proposed to her before.

-

Ayumi was happy for Jiro. She really was, but the look on Jaejoong's face made her feel so worried. It was all because of that stupid Hebe girl. She was dazzling, Ayumi couldn't deny that, but it didn't make her any less of a jerk. She saw the girl put her sweater back on and talk to the sweet looking girl in the creamy colored dress. Her face looked a little pale but Ayumi decided to ignore that.

She got out of her seat, her glass of wine in hand. She walked up towards Jiro and Selina, shaking their hands and congratulating them. Hebe walked over to them as well, giving them her best wishes and saying goodbye. Just as she was walking away, Ayumi bumped into her and spilled her wine all over Hebe's sweater.

"Oh dear, I am so sorry." Ayumi said insincerely while sending her an icy glare.

"Isn't that just a little immature?" Hebe whispered fiercely. Ayumi shrugged her shoulders and gave her innocent puppy eyes.

"I don't know what you mean." Ayumi gave her a slight grin and walked back to her seat where Jiro had started a conversation with the men.

-

"Oh god! Hebe, what happened?" Angela asked, wiping at her sweater with a napkin. Hebe shook her head, but tears were threatening to fall.

"Wine doesn't come off. I'm okay." Hebe assured her, brushing her hand away.

"Well, at least your dress is saved." Angela tried to make her feel better but with each word, Hebe wanted to cry. She forced a small smile and waved goodbye to Angela.

"Bye, I'll call you another time." With that, Hebe was hidden behind the entrance door, crying her eyes out. She struggled to walk to her car. She hated everyone! She didn't even do anything to Ayumi but date her boyfriend, Jaejoong. Why did she have to ruin her treasured item? She wished it was the dress she had ruined. She didn't give a damn for her dress, but her sweater meant everything to her!

Hebe wiped her eyes with the back of her hand. She was twenty three and all her life she had never cried this much or this hard. All the things that she had kept inside or ignored as a child came back to her in tears. She ripped off her sweater and screamed, banging on her head. She wanted to quit. Quit everything and stop living. She started her car and speeded down the road towards her cabin house.

She turned her key and opened her door. She looked at the crumpled piece of clothing in her hands and sighed. She opened up her closet and delicately placed the sweater back onto its hanger.

Last year, the year before, and every year before that was "the" July 26th. The day of dread and dead dreams. The day where she would give up and sulk to her heart's content. This year, Selina was engaged. This year, Jaejoong isn't her boyfriend. This year was different; she was different.

Hebe walked into her kitchen and turned on her lights. She gasped at who was sitting at her kitchen table.

"Aaron?"

"Uh, hi. You left your door open and well, I just wanted to check up on you. You looked a bit out of it." Aaron told her, staring at her red eyes.

"I'm fine, you can leave now." Hebe whispered, her voice shaking.

"Are you sure?" Aaron asked. Hebe nodded her head, but tears had fallen onto her pale cheeks once again.

"Today if July 26th, just another awful day." Hebe whispered and fell into Aaron's warm arms, crying all the tears she had tried so hard to keep from falling. Aaron held her in his arms, feeling sad for Hebe. This had to be more than just Jaejoong. It had to be much more deeper than a break up.

"Just forget what happened." Aaron tried to console her but she shook her head and continued to cry.

"I can't," Hebe murmured. "I don't want to."
