As Ron stared out of the window, a tear rolled down his cheeks. All he could say was “I’m sorry Leila.”
*FLASHBACK*
At the hospital in Doctor Joe Ma’s office:
Doctor Joe Ma: “Hi Ron, how are you feeling today?”
Ron: “I felt pretty good until you called me and told me to come to your office. What’s the problem Joe?”
Doctor Joe Ma: “well Ron do you remember about a week ago when you did a complete check up?”
Ron: “yeah, are the results out?”
Doctor Joe Ma: “yes they are and I think I have some bad news…”
Ron: “what’s wrong with me Joe?”
Doctor Joe Ma: “Well Ron do you remember how your dad died?”
Ron: “yeah, he died because he operated on his heart and he couldn’t make it. But what does that make to do with me?”
Doctor Joe Ma: “I’m sorry to inform you but your check up shows that your heart is slower than a normal heart and we suspect that you might have the same problem as your father did.”
Ron: “so what does that mean? Do I have to operate like my father did?”
Doctor Joe Ma: “to put it simple…yes… but don’t worry, technology has improved a lot now compared to your father’s time.”
Ron: “do I have to operate? There’s no other way for me?”
Doctor Joe Ma: “there is… you can go on living your life as it is right now but soon your heart will give up on you.”
Ron: “ok, Joe what’s the chance for me to live if I operate.”
Doctor Joe Ma: “I would suggest going to the US to get an operation because the chances are doubled. In HK, you will only have a 33% chance of living, while if you operate in the US, there is a 66% chance that you will make it out alive.”
Ron: “oh…”
Doctor Joe Ma: “but there is a bad side to going to the US. Because your heart will be operated on, you will have to stay there for a while until you gain back all your strength. And I know it will be hard for you to leave HK.
Ron: “oh…lets say I do have the operation in the US how long will I have to stay there?”
Doctor Joe Ma: “for at least 6 months. But I do have to warm you Ron… your heart is getting weaker by the moment so I suggest you make a decision quick. ”
Ron: “I got it Joe. Thanks. Is that it? I want to go home and think about it.”
Doctor Joe Ma: “ok Ron… hope to hear from you soon.”
Ron: “yea me too…”
*END OF FLASHBACK*
*FLASHBACK*
At the Ng’s house.
Linda: “so what did Joe want Ron?”
Ron: “oh nothing, just wanted to talk about my check-up. He said I was fine. Well I’m kinda tired so I’m going to bed ok.”
Linda: “Ron Ng… you stop there for me. I’m your mother. I been there for you since you were in my stomach. Do you think you can lie to me without me noticing it?”
Ron: “ok mom, your right. I could never lie to you. Well the doctor said that I might have the same problem like dad. My heart is much slower than a normal person.”
Linda: “so you have to operate like you father?”
Ron: “yea.”
Linda: “don’t worry honey I’ll give up all of my money just to keep you safe.”
Ron: “I know mom. But the problem is that I have to go to the US to operate because there’s a bigger chance I will live if I operate there.”
Linda: “well then lets go. What’s the problem? O... Leila right? Don’t worry just tell her she will understand.”
Ron: “I know... but I also know her too well. She will give up everything even her career for me and I don’t want that.”
Ray steps in the house
Ray: “what’s wrong Ron?”
Ron: “to tell you the truth I’m sick, I have a heart condition like my father.”
Ray: “Are you serious?”
Ron: “yea ray.”
Linda: “that it’s Ron I can’t take it anymore you are going to go to the US with me!”
