Just as I was reading the entertainment section of the morning papers, a pair of hands grabbed my papers away and handcuffed my wrist. Oh no! I looked up and saw that handsome looking but very irritating person. Inspector Lee Minwoo. What does he want now.
“I’m taking you in this time” He said sternly.
“But I have not even started selling anything!” I looked at my nicely arranged watches. It was 12 noon, the lunch time crowd has not even left their office.
“Inspector Lee, why do you always pick on me?” I said angrily and gave him a fierce stare.
“You committed an offence, I am just doing my job” he said coldy.
“There are many other bad people around, I think you are against me. I am going to lodge a complain against you!” I struggled with the handcuffs.
“Sure, go ahead, I would love to read your complain” He said and took my cap off, releasing my long hair.
He must have got my message that I hate him because my stare made him stand frozen on the ground for at least 10 seconds.
“Get into the car” He instructed.
I got on his police car and quietly followed him back to the police station.
“Name?” He asked
“You already know my name!” I answered hastlily. How can he not know my name. He caught me that last time! If I have a magic wand, I’ll make him disappear.
“Your name” He ignored me and repeated his question.
“Lee Chae Yeon” I answered kindly. He is so difficult to talk to, where is park oppa and kang oppa? I looked around the police station but all I saw was unfamiliar faces that gave me unfriendly looks.
“Birthdate”
“1986” I answered obediently.
“Month and Year?”
“I don’t know”
“What do you mean by you don’t know. What is your birthdate? Missy, don’t waste my time like this. The sooner we get done, the sooner I can lock you up” He looked up and directed his words at me.
“I said I don’t know, I don’t have a birthday” I softly answered.
Since I went to school and attended birthday parties, I’ve always wondered why I didn’t have a birthday. Uncle used to say that only rich kids get to celebrate birthdays. But as I grew older I realized that its because no one knew when my birthday is. On Christmas day I will secretly wish myself happy birthday.
“Why do you keep repeating the same offence?” Inspector minwwo’s words disrupted my thinking.
“That’s what I do for a living” I honestly answered
“What can’t you do anything else?” He started to sound nicer and less domineering. I realized his eyes looks like mine, his face too… if I was a guy, I’ll look a lot like him.
“I don’t know how to do anything else” I answered, after noticing his stares.
“Inspector, should I take over?” Another policeman came up to Inspector Minwoo.
“No, just lock her up for the night” He said and left.
There are defiantly some changes done in this police station. I learnt that Policeman Park is on a long vacation to celebrate his 20th wedding anniversary. How sweet. But now I am stucked with this Inspector who has serious mood swings.
After a few hours being locked up, I was the only person left in the lock up area. It must be getting dark outside, because I started to become very hungry. Just as my stomach was growling, the door opened. It was Inspector Lee Minwoo.
“Your dinner” He said softly and passed me a box of Fried Chicken. KFC for dinner? Life is getting better. Looks like Inspector Minwoo is not such a baddie after all.
“Thank you” I took the bag from him. But he’s probably not the joking type. I shall just mind my own business and serve my one night sentence.
“This blanket…. You can have it. … it is going to be cold tonight” He place a blanket beside me and left. Maybe I judged him wrongly. Maybe he does have some kindness.
“Thank you” I gave him a smile. He turned back and starred at me with his puppy eyes and left the room.
Life is not entirely bad, although sometimes I think it is unfair and difficult, especially when its cold and I have no where to stay or no money to buy food, but help does come along the way. 7 years alone and I am still alive.
It was a very cold night, the blanket Inspector Lee gave me really helped to keep me warm. I slept well that night, although it was on a bench. I need to work harder and longer hours now, winter is coming and I really need a place to stay.
***
The morning was exceptionally cold, I made my way to the abandoned factory shop, and sat down reading the staff magazine of the police department which i grabbed on my way out. Inspector Minwoo was featured in it.
*Lee Minwoo, 22 years old
Inspector Lee graduated top of his class and was awarded a special prize for his dedication and commitment to the police department. He enjoys swimming, soccer, baseball and his favourite food is Kentucky Fried Chicken. He is a bright and shinny new star in the police department and his first assignment is to the notorious Dae-mun district.*
Twenty two.. just a year older than me. Top in his class. Seoul’s new Ace cop perhaps. Such an accomplished person with a bright future. But I should stay away from him. Police and illegal hawkers just don’t mix well.
He likes KFC too! That’s why I had that for dinner last night. Lee Minwoo, I hope we don’t get to see each other again. You are disruptive to my life.
As I put the magazine away, I heard some people coming in.
“Mr Lee, this is the site that we would like to demolish” An older man said. There were about 6 of them, all dressed in suits. I hid in a corner to observe the situation.
“This area is getting a face lift?” A familiar voice said
“Yes, the buyer is offering double the market value, it’s a goodtime to sell” Another man said
“But I think the value will increase. I think this factory has a good location” the familiar voice interrupted.
“ha-chew!” Opps. I just sneezed. It is so dusty here…. I am going to get discovered. I just know it.
“Who is that?” A man started walking towards me. Before I had time to react, he found me.
“Sorry to bother, I’m leaving” I said and wanted to escape.
“Who are you and what are you doing here?” A man pulled me back.
“Chae Yeon shi?” someone called my name. Who is that? I turned around and saw him. It was Lee Seung gi. The rich prince.
I stood frozen on the ground. I didn’t know why, but my head went blank.
“Are you alright?” Seung gi came up to me and pushed away the hands of the man who was grabbing my shoulders.
“I’m alright” I finally managed to say.
Lee Seung gi looked around and saw my suitcase.
“I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to overhear your meeting. I was just living there till I find a place to stay” I said to him.
“You don’t have a place to stay after your old place got demolished?” He asked kindly. He didn’t look angry, not at all. He looked very concern.
“I have not found a place that I can afford.. .. that’s why” I softly explained
“Why didn’t you call me? I thought I asked you to look for me if you needed help?”
“Well I don’t really need help…” my voice got softer and softer… why is he looking at me like that? The look I got at Uncle’s funeral. The sympathetic look.
“I have a place for you to stay, it’s a spare room, if you don’t mind..” Lee Seung gi finally said.
“You have a room to rent?” I started to get excited.
“If you are willing, we could share an apartment, I live alone now” He smiled
“But i can only afford 500 a month” I said. I wonder how much he is charging. Sharing a house with him, that’s not too bad is it?
“Kim” He called. An older man came up to him.
“Yes Mr Lee” that older man said
“Pack Ms Chae Yeon’s things up and bring them to the car.” Seung gi instructed.
“You don’t have to pay me rent, I said it’s a spare room” He opened the car door for me.
“No, how can I stay for free? Let me pay you 500 a month” I insisted and stood beside the car refusing to get in. There’s no such thing as free things, I learnt that at a very young age. No matter how nice this Lee Seung gi appears to be, I cannot live for free.
“We’ll see. You can help me in other things” He smiled again, revealing his cute dimples
“Like cooking and cleaning? I’m not a good cook but I can try” I got into his car. Sounds like a good arrangement here. It should be fun, living with someone that is not a thief or a drug dealer.
