Jay twisted the fragile stem carefully, shaping it into a circle and tied both ends together. When he finished, he turned it around. It looks like a ring all right, Jay thought. Earlier that day, during a very boring History period, Jay had a brilliant idea of making Suzz a handmade ring, just for fun. After what happened yesterday, Jay had this thought that maybe, just maybe, Suzz had the same feelings for him like what he had for her. Due to his shy nature, Jay hadn’t had much experience of courting a girl. But he hoped that by being himself, shy and all, he could reach out to her delicate heart.
He glanced at the ring in his palm. It was very simple, actually; a small white flower stood out amidst the tiny green leaves like a sparkling ruby on a wedding ring. Jay had carefully plucked a stem from a baby breaths’ flower along the way from school. Back home, he gingerly removed the larger leaves so that the white flower is seen, shining brightly, its petals fragile. Now that it was done, Jay lay it to rest on the wooden table in front of him. He cleared the table, sweeping the unwanted leaves into his palm, stood up, and dumped them into a dustbin nearby.
Jay passed by the silent piano in the hall, and halted. Tomorrow is the concert, he realized. He headed towards the piano, and sat down noiselessly on the seat. The spotless and shiny piano reflected his image as he poised his fingers on the keyboard. Taking a deep breath, he started off softly. As the speed gradually became faster and the dynamics louder, Jay played with his eyes closed. Images of the past fleeted through his mind, and he felt like he was going through a time machine. First, a picture of little Jay waving goodbye to his parents came into mind. He remembered the way his parents waved back, smiles plastered on their happy faces. It was his first day in kindergarten, Jay recalled. His parents had sent him there early in the morning, and watched as five-year-old Jay walked into the kindergarten compound, an expression of fear clearly written in his face. But as months progressed, Jay found himself enjoying the lessons and he liked the teachers there, especially the nice lady who brought him a miniature, electronic guitar during the music classes.
Jay recalled the fateful day when tragedy struck. He remembered it so clearly like it was yesterday. In the middle of a fun-filled mathematics class, the headmistress came into the room. Jay Chou, she announced. Jay, please come out for a moment, the teacher called gently. Confused, he went with the headmistress to her office, and sat down on the comfortable couch. The headmistress was talking; he could see her mouth opened and closed as she spoke. But he heard no words; instead, Jay, being inquisitive, was observing the office with a curiosity of a young boy. In the midst of imagining the model of an army plane safely put inside a glass cupboard as a real battle plane with real bullets and real bombs, the headmistress reached out for his hand and squeezed it. Although startled, Jay managed an absent-minded smile. Only when he reached home in his uncle’s car did he understood the reason the headmistress called him out. His parents’ plane had crashed into the Pacific Ocean on the flight home. None of the plane’s passengers survived, including the pilot and the plane’s crew. His relatives thought he was young, and would not fully understood the grief that comes with death. They comforted him a little, telling him that his parents are now in Heaven looking down at him, bestowing their blessings upon him. But Jay’s age belies his maturity. He understood that his parents are no longer going to wave goodbye to him every morning when they dropped him at the school… knew that the piano that stood in the hall will forever be stained with sad memories of the past… realized that he’s all alone.
Another image quickly erased the former ones, replacing them. This time, Jay saw a blur picture of himself, sitting at the deserted park, a piece of blank paper in his hands. Jay remembered the scene, and a faint smile crept onto his lips. He was thinking of words to write in the letter, which he was going to give to the pretty girl next class. Admiring her from a distance, Jay had eventually mustered the courage to tell her how he feels, in words. But what can a twelve-year-old boy say about love? After some deep thinking, Jay decided to send her the score for one of his songs, composed when he was thinking about her. To his very disappointment, the girl came up to him one day and said, “Jay, thanks for the score. It’s beautiful. But… I’m sorry. Let’s just be friends.” Those words stung him, but he forced a weak smile and a nod. Sure, he said unconvincingly. The devastation that followed: sleepless nights and dreamless slumber, they remained imprinted in his mind.
That was when Jay vowed to never let anyone hurt him in any way. He was afraid to taste the bitterness of rejection again. Love, he had thought, could only happen in fairy tales. In real life, love doesn’t exist, except, if you count parental love.
But then, fate changed his perception. He met an incredibly talented girl, fell in love, and his world was turned upside-down. It was this special girl who made him see what love offers in return. Friendship, boy-girl relationship… they are all different forms of love, different in intensity, and of course, in the matter of commitment. Jay was thankful that his love for her started off merely as a friend’s care. This way, it could be built, step by step, strengthening at each stage. Jay could easily picture her smile, the twinkle in her eyes when she laughs; it was deeply carved into his memory box.
At the thought of her, Jay felt a slight tingle rushed through his body. He stopped playing; his fingers froze on top of the piano. A nagging haunted his thoughts. What if she slips away from his grasp without ever knowing how he felt for her? What if she never did get to hear him say he loves her? Jay stirred, scared by the fact that she might be going to leave him. Either for the operation, which will be in New York, or to… Jay gulped. The most he could do for her, and for himself, is to let her days be as colorful as possible. Jay wanted so badly to be by her side; just the angelic look of her sleeping is breathtaking.
I need to tell her, Jay decided. Getting up, he paced around the room, his thoughts in a whirl. Suddenly, his eyes fell upon the so-called ring, resting peacefully on the table. He walked towards it, and gently scooped it up. An idea began to take form. He could give the ring to Suzz after the concert tomorrow night. He would take her up to some beautiful, lonely place, the balcony perhaps, and hand it to her. And at the same time, he would reach out for her hand, and tell her how much he loves her. The moon would be full that night; its maidenly light casting long shadows on the smooth marble floor, which in return reflect the purifying glow of the moon.
Jay smiled unconsciously; picturing the way her eyes will lit up when she saw what he done for her. It may be simple, Jay could hear himself telling her, but it’s with all my heart that I give it to you. The ring will be a token of the undying love he had for her, Jay thought. And Suzz, she will fling her arms over him, telling him how long she had waited for him to make the first move.
With the new resolution in mind, Jay sat on the comfortable sofa by the window, happily thinking of ways to make the moment even more special. He held up the ring, turning it around and around, the feeling of impatience washed over him.
When tomorrow night comes, he and Suzz will be together. The efforts he had make in sustaining the friendship finally pay off. After putting in time, and of course love, the hard-earned fruit tastes sweet.
