Chapter 2

The Beginning of Everything

He was feeling miserable. The first day in this relatively new school had been a horrible experience. The students swarmed past him like he was non-existent. He had sat right at the back of the class, in a dark corner, alone. His classmates were throwing chalks over the room. The lecturer, with his back facing the class, was oblivious of the white chalks flying across the room. When he turned to face the students, they immediately sat properly and began copying the notes on the black board. There were no signs of the chalks anywhere and the students were behaving angelically. Jay had smiled under his baseball cap, which was an essential necessity wherever he go, but still felt out of place.

After the school bell rang, signaling the end of the lessons, Jay had been left alone in the library, doing a research on a subject in which he had failed to understand the concepts. Hours flew past without Jay realizing it. After completing the last of his notes, he yawned and stretched his arms. He said a polite “goodbye” to the librarian and walked out of the door. The corridors seemed unnaturally quiet. His footsteps created hollow echoes. Wanting to get back home and take a bath, he halted abruptly before a door. It was slightly ajar. An immense curiosity crept into him, tempting him to open the door. Carefully and noiselessly, he pushed the door. The sight of an acoustic piano greeted him. There were a few violin cases on the floor. A case had been opened, revealing a spotless and shining violin in it.

Jay lay his books on a chair nearby and walked carefully towards the piano. The familiar instrument brought Jay relief. It made him feel connected. Sitting down, he let his fingers ran through the keys. A musical talent, Jay began to play. He had written many, many songs, yet no one had ever listen to them before. He didn’t want to share, knowing that others will laugh at him if they find out about his self-composed songs. Halfway through one of his incomplete songs, he felt a tingling sensation as if someone was staring at him. Nevertheless, he continued playing. The uncomfortable feeling of someone watching him grew in his heart, and he found himself turning around.

Then, he had almost gotten a fright. A girl was leaning against the door; her hands crossed. Her light brown hair was tied into a messy ponytail and she was wearing the school uniform. For a moment, Jay debated the thought that he had seen a ghost. But after realizing that the girl was walking towards him and not floating, he gave a soft sigh.

“You wrote that song?” she looked at him critically. Jay nodded wordlessly; feeling a little annoyed at her who had just stepped into his ‘territory’. “Let me improvise,” she said, moving closer towards him. Jay stood up and watched her sit on the chair with a doubtful eye. She hesitated and rested her hands on the keyboard. Jay folded his arms, looking skeptical. But all thoughts seemed to be blown away from his mind when the girl played. Only after a while, he realized that she was playing the incomplete song he had played earlier. The song was hardly recognizable to him anymore; she had improvise a lot, adding some chords to it and finishing it till the end.

When the song had ended, Jay felt breathless. This is another girl who has the talent, he thought to himself. The girl stood up, slightly flushed. She apologized for being rude to him just now; explaining that she was feeling a little frustrated. “It’s my first day in this school,” she said sadly.

Jay had been surprised. Coincidentally, he told her, it was also his first day here. The girl looked amazed. Jay extended his hand, quite amused at his own boldness, and said. “I’m Jay. You?” he asked softly.

“Suzz,” she replied quietly, shaking his hand. They talked for a while, in which their conversation was filled with awkward gaps of silence. Finally, desperate to break the ice between them, Jay suggested to continue playing the piano. Suzz had looked relieved at the mention of it. They shared the chair, both of their hands were placed at the keyboard: Jay’s on the lower part, Suzz the higher. Jay trembled slightly, aware of Suzz close to him. Being a shy person, girls were reluctant to come close with him, let alone talk to him. Yet this Suzz… Jay remembered the way he put out his hand in confidence. Never a person that is sociable, Jay preferred to let time pass by spending time on his piano. He glanced sideways towards his right. Suzz’s fingers touched the notes. She started playing the song Jay composed again. Jay willed himself to concentrate on the music, and soon, the both of them were playing together. The accuracy of their speed and rhythm to match up with each other had been logic defying. The combination of his slow, solemn tune and her fast and furious scales was not exactly the perfect ingredients to a perfect song, yet the two contrasting styles blended easily, balancing each other’s movement.

The both of them had ended the song at the same time. Out of breath, Jay could only stare at Suzz. The girl had a disbelieving look on her face. She turned to look at him. Jay shrugged and smiled weakly. The both of them then laughed. Jay noted the way her eyes twinkled when she was laughing. After a while, the both of them calmed down and began to talk.

A friendship, which would soon blossomed into something more beautiful, was formed.
