Jay ran as fast as he could up the stairs. Suzz would never forgive me, he thought, silently cursing the pile of assignments that was due on the next day. He had been doing some research on tropical animals and plants, and was oblivious at how fast the time had flew past. He had, by chance, glanced at his wristwatch and got the shock of his life when he realized he was late. Not merely late, but a whole two hours. Jay pictured Suzz waiting anxiously in the music room, and scolded himself for not being punctual. He could only hope that Suzz would still be there.
He burst into the music room and started muttering excuses when he realized that everything was silent. His eyes wandered throughout the room, adjusting to the dim evening sunlight shaded by the curtains. Something caught his attention. He turned. There she was, resting, on the piano with its lids closed. Using her hands as pillows, she was sleeping; Jay watched her back rise and fall peacefully as she breathed deeply. The sight took his breath away. There was a certain gentleness in her face as she slept; a soft light that seemed to radiate within her, giving her the purifying glow of a sleeping angel. That’s right, Jay thought, smiling. A sleeping angel.
Walking as softly as he could, Jay reached the piano. Suzz’s light brown hair was all over her face. Jay tucked the stray strands of hair behind her ears. She looked so innocent, so naďve… unlike any other girls he had met . He touched her cheeks, ran his fingers through her hair, never once stop gazing at the angel before him. Suzz…. he whispered. What would it feel to have her in my arms? Jay found himself thinking. And we would watch the sun set together… in a faraway beach…
Suzz stirred, and woke up. She had heard her name, though she thought it was something that she was dreaming of. But when she saw Jay, she quickly sat upright.
Hi, Jay had greeted her. Suzz nodded, momentarily speechless. She was dreaming about him… the way he smile, the way his eyes twinkle when he laugh, the way his face brighten when she tell him a joke… it was so vividly imprinted in her mind. Suzz stretched, trying to stifle a yawn, feeling restless.
Tired? Jay asked. Suzz nodded again, and then broke into a grin. “Why so late?” she demanded.
Jay shrugged, chuckling. Assignments, he replied. Sorry, he apologized.
Suzz shook her head, and as she did so, she felt a little dizzy. A slight dull ringing in her head blunted her sense of hearing. Suzz felt panic rising in her; these were signs. She struggled to calm down, inhaling deeply before letting the air out slowly. Steadily, the buzzing decreased, leaving her light-headed. She swayed a little, closing her eyes as she regained composure.
Are you all right? Jay had asked urgently, noticing the way Suzz’s face paled. Suzz dismissed him with a wave of her hands, assuring that she’s fine. Jay glanced at her in anxiety. She didn’t look right, Jay thought to himself.
Suzz waited until the buzzing stop, and then opened her eyes. Her heart skipped a beat as she saw Jay looking intensely at her. Willing herself to avoid those eyes, she remembered the good news she was supposed to tell him. Even she could not bring herself to believe such news. Her parents had surprised her that night before; and so shocked her reaction was that she looked stumped. Her mother had told her, smiling proudly as she did so, that she had arranged for her to play solo in an upcoming classical concert in which she would be accompanied by a full orchestra. At first, Suzz refused; playing as a soloist in front of a 1000-odd audience struck her as particularly terrifying. After much persuasion and discussion, Suzz agreed to play on a condition that she would be playing alone, without the orchestra. Her parents beamed happily, and her father proposed that she finds an equally talented friend to play in one of the day’s earlier programs. And the first person that came into mind was…
Jay, she called. Jay turned to face her, curiosity in his eyes. Know what? she said, excitement rising within her. “My parents had arranged for me to play in this classical concert, two months from now! And completely solo too!”
Jay nodded with a soft grunt. That’s really good, he exclaimed, knowing what all this meant to Suzz. She had told him once, that her greatest dream was to play in front of an audience who understand and appreciate music as it is. Which was why she chose to learn classical music over others. She felt that classical music is music in its truest and purest form. Now that the dream was going to be fulfilled, Jay couldn’t help but feel happy for her as well.
Suzz stopped smiling; a mischievous twinkle replaced the glowing light in her eyes. Jay glanced at her, skeptical at the sudden change when she suddenly spoke. And that’s not all, she said with an aura of mystery. Jay tilted his head slightly; his eyes not once leaving her face. “You’re invited to play too!” she finally burst.
Jay’s jaw dropped. Play? Concert? He stammered, blinking in confusion. Suzz nodded, clearly amused at his reaction, though not surprised. “Yep,” she laughed. “My dad says there’s an empty slot earlier the day I’m supposed to perform. And he wants me to find a friend who’s equally good in music to play.”
Jay smiled weakly, apparently still shocked over the news. And you chose me? He asked carefully.
Suzz nodded quietly. Jay thought he saw her reddened slightly. He thanked her, and asked what kind of concert it is. “Classical!” she had exclaimed. Jay raised his eyebrows in doubt. Suzz noticed his skepticism and assured him that it would be a solo effort, not accompanied by a full orchestra. Jay had smiled slightly, his lips parting just a little, but it was enough to make Suzz’s heart flutter.
She toyed with the papers she had in her hand, remembering the song she and him had played the first time together. She had written down every single one of the notes on the papers, and meant to give them to Jay. She just needed a suitable name for it. Before she could open her mouth to speak, Jay spoke suddenly. Isn’t it cool that we get to play before an audience in a classical concert, since we were still considered young? He asked.
Suzz nodded, temporarily forgetting about the script in her hand. Yeah, she echoed, sort of. Her face brightened as she continued. Imagine us being in the spotlight! She said excitedly. From performing in a small-scale concert, we might just become famous together. She chuckled softly, adding quietly, as though talking to herself. And we’ll probably do everything together.
Jay had strained his ear to hear what she was muttering, but nevertheless heard her words. A warm feeling seeped into him, and he whispered, more to himself than to her. And we’ll be together till the end. He had blurted that out without exactly understanding the reason for it, since he felt that the words were way out of the topic. But as he said it, he gently steered Suzz to face him.
Suzz’s expression remained still, yet Jay could just make out the tiny flicker of fire in her eyes. Suzz blinked, and as though all her senses had came back into her, her face began to turn red and she stammered as she mumbled something soft. Jay felt a raging urge to tell her how he felt for her. He knew he loved her. Not merely as a close friend, but as true lovers are. The feelings so gently seeped into him that he didn’t realized it at first.
Suzz was momentarily shocked, but not unhappy to hear his words. Jay moved closer to her. Suzz stiffened as their eyes met. His eyes seemed to burn with strong intensity. He leaned forward, until their lips were only inches away. There, Jay paused, not out of hesitation, but he wanted to make this a memorable experience. Suzz’s heart nearly stopped beating as he broke the distance and touched her lips lightly with his own. It was a brief kiss, like a gentle breeze upon her lips, but it felt like a raging storm, destroying all logic and ration in her mind. Suzz trembled as they parted; her mind was in a complete whirl. Simple as it is, the kiss had opened the gates of the dam of emotion, leaving her breathless, and confused. Suzz tried to sort her feelings by looking into his eyes again, but all she saw was the depth of his eyes… and love. She choked, suddenly finding it hard to breathe. Jay was still waiting for an answer, a reply… but Suzz quickly grabbed her bag and stood up rapidly.
As she did so, her sudden actions caused a slight dizziness in her head. She closed her eyes, trying to stop herself from swaying too obviously. As soon as the dizziness decreased, she headed straight for the door. She heard Jay standing up and calling her name, but she ignored him. The dull, not unfamiliar buzzing in her ears had become too painful as she steadied herself, her hands leaning against the door. She could feel the blood pumping loudly through the veins in her head. She closed her eyes and tried to shake the sounds away. Instead of making it disappear, the action worsened it and Suzz found herself falling backwards… backwards… The last thing she heard was a faraway, distant voice calling out “Suzz!” and everything blacked out.
