"What do you m--" TOP said when the bell suddenly rang. What great timing, he thought. Meanwhile, Yoobin was thinking, 'Saved by the bell!' She took this chance to quickly go back to class and get her stuff and run for it when she gets the chance. After saying this and realizing how she felt, she can't possibly face him. TOP of course went the same way as her, and he didn't mention another word about the topic.
"TOP! Where were you? I was waiting for you," said Hyori when she saw him walk in the door. He ignored her as he watched Yoobin gather her things and stuff it in her small bag. 'Should I ask her?' he asked himself. 'No, not with Hyori around...' He turned towards her and smiled.
"Sorry, I had some things to sort out," he said and walked to his seat. He looked over at Jiyong who looked VERY lonely, quietly sitting on his seat. "Yah, Jiyong-ah..."
"Aish, don't talk to me. You ditchers never know how I feel," Jiyong replied as he pouted. TOP grinned.
"Yah, sorry. I just had a little talk with Yoobin." TOP grabbed his books and put it neatly in his red backpack.
"You two always fight and then end up making me feel lonely, how rude," Jiyong complained and felt a presence from behind him and found Hyori standing there.
"TOP... you had a 'little' talk with Yoobin?" she asked. 'Uh-oh,' Jiyong thought and stood up. He was planning to escape this scene before being involved in Hyori's wrath. As he walked past TOP, he whispered, "You're better off with Yoobin."
TOP looked at him, slightly shocked. He might have been right. Jiyong left the room and now he was left with Hyori, who didn't look she was at the right state of mind.
"What was the talk about?" Hyori asked. She seemed to nag him more that they weren't together anymore. TOP shook his head.
"Nothing big," he mumbled. Hyori didn't look satisfied as she crossed her arms. TOP grabbed his backpack and started to walk away. Usually, he wouldn't be able to do such a thing to her but it seemed so easy to do now.
"Yah, if it was nothing big, why can't you tell me?" Hyori asked as she reached for one of his arms. TOP shook it off lightly, not wanting to take it too far. "TOP, aren't you going to tell your girlfriend what you talked about with another girl?"
TOP gave her a weird look. "What girlfriend?" he asked, wondering when this happened.
"Don't you remember? Yesterday at the cafeteria, we came back," she said but TOP shook his head. It wasn't that he didn't remember, but he wasn't planning on being together with her again.
"Hyori... I'm sorry to say this but we didn't do anything like that yesterday. All I wanted to show was that I care for you as a friend and that I'm sorry for hurting you, but I didn't mean it to look like I still wanted you," he said and Hyori's heart felt like a nail stabbed through it.
"What.. do you.. m-mean?" Hyori asked, slowly realizing what he wants to say but deeply wished he didn't say it.
"I mean... I don't love you anymore. Its just not the same," he said. He hadn't realized that he didn't love her anymore until he talked to Yoobin. What exactly did he feel? Hyori touched his arm lightly, slowly trying to hug him. Her body language was shouting that she wants him back but TOP knew better. He held her shoulders and carefully pushed her away. He shook his head. No meant no.
With that, he walked away without another word and Hyori stayed where she was. It was a fast but painful break-up, yet it wasn't even a break-up. She couldn't feel the tears. It was too painful for her, no matter how many liter of tears she cried, it wouldn't show how hurt she felt. Over time, her personality became worse as she realized that she wanted TOP TOO much. And now that he's made it clear, the pain she felt was also TOO much.
--- --- ---
"Yo, TOP, how'd it go?" Jiyong asked when TOP sat down with him and the other two members on a small table.
"Yah, hyung did she go all crazy on you?" Seung Ri asked, demonstrating how a girl goes crazy, specifically Hyori. TOP smiled but shook his head. "Don't tell me you were all nice to her again. Seriously hyung, we need to tell you, but she's actually a really crazy girl. She even --"
"I know." They all looked at TOP, surprised by what he said. Usually, he would have shouted back at them and said that they were wrong but this was the first time he simply said, "I know."
"Hyung... what do you mean? You know..." Dae Sung asked and TOP looked at him with a sad smile.
"I didn't realize it sooner but I think you all might be right. She isn't the same girl. When I first met her, she was kind, beautiful and had a personality that anyone would love. But after the things that have been happening..." TOP said and remembered the events that occurred in the last few weeks. Yoobin played a major role in his confusion. "But it doesn't really matter if she's the same or how evil she is."
"What?" Jiyong asked, finally thinking that TOP might be going crazy.
TOP sighed. "I don't love her. Not anymore."
"Oh." They all looked at him and he wondered why they weren't surprised.
"Hyung, it isn't hard to tell. For a while, we doubted that you were but it seemed you were slowly forgetting her. But we really expected you to still be so overprotective." The other two nodded. TOP laughed and rolled his eyes.
"Yah, was she really that bad?" he asked, although he didn't care about what she acted like anymore. His ideal girl used to be so blurry but now, it gets clearer and clearer. The first step to getting close to the one that might be right for him is to forget the old love.
Jiyong grabbed his juice and drank out of it. Just around the corner, he saw Sunye walking with Taeyang towards their table.
"Hey guys, what are you doing here?" Jiyong asked and noticed their concerned faces.
"Have you seen Yoobin? I've been calling her and looked all over for her but she isn't anywhere to be found," Sunye said with a sad tone. She didn't like the idea of losing sight of her. Yoobin wasn't usually like this unless she was feeling bad about something or felt depressed. She looked at their faces and noticed TOP look away, as if trying to avoid something. "TOP, did something happen?"
TOP glanced at her but quickly looked away, avoiding her question. Jiyong and the rest looked at him, wondering what was wrong.
"Hyung, did you do something to Yoobin?" Dae Sung asked and TOP shook his head.
"Yah, why does everyone think I did something?" TOP said with a bit of annoyance in his voice. Taeyang was serious.
"TOP, I could only think that it was you or Hyori that caused her to suddenly be gone like this." Taeyang's face held a grim expression. He really felt concerned about her.
"She's gone?" TOP replied. Taeyang sighed at TOP's obliviousness. He had already noticed that he liked Yoobin, and even before Yoobin noticed what she felt, he already knew that she liked TOP but he just can't believe that he doesn't notice at all.
"I'll talk to you later. Sunye, let's go look for her," Taeyang suggested and she nodded. "Yah, if you guys see her or know something, let me know right away."
"Okay, hyung," said Seung Ri and Dae Sung agreed. Jiyong slowly shook his head, but he already felt like he knew something. He waited for Taeyang and Sunye to walk away before saying anything to TOP. He turned towards him and watched him eat his food lifelessly.
"TOP... didn't you just have a talk with Yoobin before lunch time?" Jiyong asked. TOP nodded and shrugged.
"So?" he said. He took a small bite but didn't seem to enjoy his usual favorite food.
Jiyong crossed his arms and leaned back against his seat. Seung Ri and Dae Sung listened attentively to their hyungs' chat. They could feel the intense aura around them as Jiyong confronted TOP who looked like he didn't want to talk about it.
"What did you two talk about? When she came back she seemed like she wanted to escape right away," he said, reciting what he witnessed in Class C when he felt lonely.
TOP rolled his eyes. "I want to escape right now, too," he mumbled but Jiyong didn't hear. "I just wanted to point out that she really did like me."
Jiyong stared at him and so did the two maknaes, their eyes wide with disbelief and their jaws dropping wide open. "Are you serious, hyung?" asked Seung Ri. TOP shrugged and smirked.
"If you hadn't noticed, I can be more popular than Taeyang," he said. Dae Sung shook his head from side to side.
"Yah, hyung doesn't it look like she likes Taeyang, and not you?" Dae Sung said. TOP glared at him. There was no need to point that out. TOP felt a weird feeling, always having an uncomfortable notion when he hears Taeyang and Yoobin liking each other or somewhat similar to that.
"Isn't it obvious that she's head over heels for me?" he said confidently and Seung Ri laughed.
"You're the man, hyung," he said and gave TOP a high five but shook his head. "But I totally agree with Dae Sung, she looks like she wants to use her heels and hit your head with it. With Taeyang, she seems happier. Don't you remember that hug the other d--"
"Don't remind me about that," TOP said coldly and Seung Ri was taken aback. Jiyong already knew. Yoobin didn't feel a thing for Taeyang and even Taeyang knew this but he knew that the old time player would still try to win her heart. For this stupid idiot beside him however, still hasn't realized what his heart is calling for.
"Hyung, you don't have to be so jealous," Seung Ri pointed out and TOP looked at him with shock. "It isn't the first time Taeyang-hyung has hugged a girl. I'm sure you could find a new girl in no time. How about any of the Wonderfuls?"
TOP nodded while stroking his chin gently. "Maybe Sohee."
Jiyong gulped and shook his head. TOP was confused and Jiyong tried to cover it up. "She's too... young for you. Yeah, too young."
TOP nodded, agreeing. "Then maybe Sunmi..."
"Yah, not Sunmi!" Seung Ri said suddenly. Seung Ri blushed and looked off to the side. "I mean she's around the same age as her."
"Then Yeeun?" TOP asked and found Dae Sung shaking his head vigorously. "What is it this time?"
"Uh... you're not her type." Obvious lie, everyone else thought, even TOP.
"Fine. Then who else?" TOP said getting annoyed. Jiyong smiled and placed his hand on TOP's shoulder.
"Yoobin?" he whispered so that only TOP would be able to hear. TOP shoved him off and stood up, shocked.
"YAH! That's a MAJOR no."
"But didn't you say she likes you?"
"SO? It doesn't mean I have to like her. And Taeyang can go with her. Geez, I'm leaving."
Jiyong watched him walk away and smiled. "Crazy TOP," he said and Seung Ri and Dae Sung looked at him, thinking he's lost his mind.
--- --- ---
"Where could she have gone?" Sunye wondered, feeling more worried as every second passed by. "She hasn't been like this for a long time."
"Did something happen?" Taeyang asked and Sunye shrugged.
"I wish I knew too," she said. She looked at Taeyang. It was their moment of being together alone but she didn't feel satisfied at all, not with her best friend somewhere out there probably feeling depressed or upset. She tried calling her again but she only heard endless rings.
The two sat down at a small bench after about an hour passed. "Yoobin-ah..." Sunye said, as she felt her eyes get foggy. She wouldn't be able to hold back her tears soon and she didn't want Taeyang to see her crying. But she couldn't stop worrying about her friend. Taeyang noticed her crying and couldn't just watch her. He needed to comfort girls who cried, especially if it was the best friend of the girl he loved. He should've known better if he knew what Sunye felt.
He held her shoulders and rested her head on his shoulder, rubbing her shoulders for comfort.
"We'll find her," he cooed. "It's going to be alright. Your best friend will be in good hands when I find her, okay?"
She felt happy being comforted by Taeyang, but something had stabbed her heart. He was doing this because she was Yoobin's best friend. He didn't want her to get hurt because Yoobin will get hurt. But what can she do? She loved the guy who loves her best friend. And what can he do? He loved the girl who loves his best friend. They had the same case...
"Sunye-ah!" Seul Gi shouted from across the grass. She didn't want to ruin the moment but she had to tell Sunye something important. "I just talked to a friend of mine and she said that she saw Yoobin walking around a small park."
"A small park? Why would she go there?" Sunye asked, getting even more worried that Yoobin had lost her mind. Taeyang thought about it for a while and snapped his fingers.
"The park!" He shouted and Sunye looked at him, clueless. "I showed her a park once. I told her it's a very relaxing place and give this calming feeling. Maybe she went there to clear her head."
"Then let's go!" Sunye said and the two headed to Taeyang's car to search for Yoobin.
--- --- ---
TOP walked lifelessly on the sidewalk, not caring about anything. He seemed to bump a few people but he looked unaware of it. He just stared at the ground as he took the slow steps, walking only straight as he thought about what was going on at the moment.
"Yah!" a voice shouted but TOP ignored it, or more like he was oblivious to the max. "Aish, this guy."
He finally came back to reality when someone had kicked him on the lower part of his leg. "Aish! Yah!"
He turned around to see Wonbin looking up at him. "You again? What are you doing here?"
Wonbin sighed. "You look like you've risen from the dead, and not so happy about it."
"I'm just thinking."
"About what? You know you're so complicated!" Wonbin complained and walked beside the tall TOP. He was quiet for a while and then he sighed.
"There's someone more complicated than me," TOP said and scratched his head, still confused about so many things.
"Who is it this time?" Wonbin asked. Sometimes he felt that he would be a bit more mature than TOP.
"You're noona," he said and Wonbin looked up at him and stopped walking.
"Yoobin-noona? What happened?"
"Nothing much... just some complicated stuff."
"Yah, you know how many times I had to hide in the house just to get away from her deathly glares and attacks?" TOP smiled a bit but didn't look completely cheerful.
"Who was it that told me about his noona in the first place? I was just using those tools as a weapon against her."
Wonbin smacked his forehead. "Yah, if I had known you knew my sister, then I wouldn't have told you a thing!"
"Well then how about telling me something else? Just help your hyung out once. Just once," TOP said and looked down at the twelve-year-old. Wonbin thought about it for a while.
"What do you need to know?"
"Does your sister like Taeyang?" TOP asked seriously and Wonbin looked puzzled.
"I'm not so sure..." he said and TOP sighed. He was no use after all. "But the thing is, noona may look like a complicated person, but she's pretty simple! I mean come on, from the looks of it, it seemed like she'll never get a boyfriend but she actually wants one you know? But I don't think that the Taeyang guy is the one she actually likes."
TOP looked at him, finally interested. "So you're saying he has a small chance?"
Wonbin shrugged and looked at TOP. "Yah... do you like Yoobin-noona?"
TOP chuckled, a real laugh this time, and raised his hands, in a motion expressing "I don't know." He rubbed Wonbin's head and messed up his hair. Wonbin quickly got annoyed while TOP laughed with him. "I'm not so sure if I will use the word 'like,' but I'm certainly interested."
"Eh~ well I don't know..." TOP glared at him and he quickly changed his mind. "But hyung, I'll vote for you! That Taeyang guy doesn't look trustworthy. At least you know the handsome boys around here." Wonbin raised his eyebrows and TOP nodded.
"Maybe I do like her..." TOP said as memories just zoomed past him. He stopped walking, his eyes widened. He just realized something. "Like... her?"
"Hyung? Is something wrong?" Wonbin asked, looking weirdly at TOP. He looked like he was having some weird flashbacks. TOP shook his head and stared at Wonbin, who was a bit startled. "Yah, what's going on with you?!"
"Wonbin-ah... I think I like... Yoobin."
"What?"
"Yoobin. I like her." TOP didn't look convinced but he knew it was true. "Yah, we need to look for her."
"Look for her? What do you mean? Shouldn't she be at school?"
"Yah, if she was at school, would I tell you to look for her? Apparently, she's in some kind of confused state. She skipped class... ON HER OWN!" TOP said and started to think of possible places where she could have gone.
"Where did you see her last time?" Wonbin asked, trying to help out.
TOP shook his head. "Only seen her at school. Any ideas where your sister goes when she's in this kind of state?"
"Ah... I know she likes to go to places where it feels relaxing."
"Relaxing? ... AISH! Why do I have to think?" TOP said, feeling completely irritated.
"Where do you go when you want to feel relaxed, calm?"
"Ah, I go to either the club nearby or the park... the park!" TOP shouted and noticed that Wonbin was completely lost. "You're a genius! Just like your sister! Let's go!"
--- --- ---
Taeyang and Sunye climbed out of the car, running towards the park. As expected, Yoobin was there, quietly swinging back and forth.
"Yoo--"
"Wait..." Taeyang said, stopping Sunye from shouting her name. "Sunye, is it okay if I talk to her for a while? I'll take care of her, I promise."
Sunye hesitated to answer. 'Will YOU be alright?' she asked him in her mind. She smiled at him and nodded. "I trust the both of you."
Taeyang smiled at her and did a surprising thing. He took a step toward her and hugged her, her heart beat racing. She felt confused, but she wanted to cherish the moment before it would soon disappear. She felt a small hint from Jiyong that something DID happen between her and TOP. Considering Yoobin's personality, it must've been something like that. Once Taeyang walks there, everything she felt she has to forget. She hugged him back quickly and released him.
"You should go. I don't want my best friend to look like a total loner," she said, faking a smile. Taeyang nodded and waved to her, thanking her once more. He slowly started to walk towards her best friend, every step that he took, her pain cutting deeper into her heart. 'Taeyang, I've just met you, but you really made a difference to how I feel. Please take care of Yoobin...'
She gradually walked away but suddenly stopped as she saw two people blocking her. One very tall, and the other was shorter. Very familiar people.
---
"Yoobin-ah..." Taeyang said and watched Yoobin's head turn toward him. She stopped swinging and looked at him with pitiful eyes.
"Taeyang?" she said softly, Taeyang could barely hear. "What are you doing here?"
"You look lonely hanging out by yourself here. Did you steal my spot now?" Taeyang asked, trying to make a light conversation. Yoobin smiled uncomfortably and he quickly realized that it wasn't working. Something was definitely wrong with her. "Do you mind telling me?"
Yoobin looked at him, a bit confused. "Telling you about what?" she asked innocently. Taeyang crossed his arms and sat on the swing beside hers.
"About what's bothering you. Sunye said that you normally don't do this." Yoobin smiled and shook her head.
"You shouldn't worry about me."
Taeyang stared at her, watching her uneasy expressions. She was lying. "Yoobin, is this about... TOP?"
"TOP? What does this have to do with TOP? I don't care about that stupid jerk..." Yoobin said, and started to swing her legs to get higher.
He sighed, noticing that Yoobin suddenly felt annoyed. He hit the spot and was obviously right. It had something to do with his best friend.
"Why can't you tell me?" Taeyang asked, and started to follow what she was doing.
"There's no reason to talk about TOP. I don't have a problem at ALL~" she said and started to swing faster. She was trying to forget about what was going on at the moment and only wanted to feel the fresh air that she felt as she swung back and forth.
"I know you like TOP," Taeyang said simply. Yoobin's legs suddenly felt like the energy was sucked out of them.
"What?!" She asked, not expecting Taeyang to say it so straightforwardly. He nodded, knowing exactly what she was thinking.
"I've noticed it for a while. I bet I even knew before you could say anything. You like TOP and right now, you feel depressed about him."
Yoobin rolled her eyes. "That's not true."
"Then what is?" he asked, and jumped off the swing. He watched Yoobin's swing gradually losing speed. She was quiet for a while as he continued to stare at her.
The swing finally stopped and she stepped on the ground, no longer sitting on it anymore. She gulped before she spoke. "I'm sorry..."
"Don't be." Yoobin looked up at him and saw his gaze with pure honesty. He didn't want her to be sorry. "I want you to look at me with sincere eyes without ever feeling the pity you feel now. You're going to apologize, saying that you can't like me since you already know how I feel. I like you, I love you, and nothing can stop this."
Yoobin felt heavy inside. She took a deep breath and looked at him but couldn't feel anything but pity. She couldn't look at him the same way she did at TOP. It was a different feeling.
"Taeyang... I don't know what I'm supposed to do..."
Suddenly, Taeyang hugged her, holding her tightly in her arms but without extreme force. Yoobin felt numb and couldn't feel the way she probably would if she had liked him.
"Yoobin..." he whispered in her ears as he hugged her. "Won't you try? Try and forget about him. And look at me. Look only at me."
