Chapter 19

It's A Guy Thing

Ximen groaned as he stretched and straightened his back. He glanced at his watch. 2:17. He leaned back into his leather chair.

‘Oh man, that was a killer. I’ve been here since 7:30 this morning and I’m not even half done with all this work. And it definitely didn’t help that I couldn’t sleep last night. Ximen, you’re the biggest coward in the world! First you couldn’t tell her your feelings and then you run away just when she tells you she’s got a date. Come on, you’re Ximen, turn up the charm and get the girl to fall for you! (He sighed) It really isn’t as easy as it sounds. When she told me and I saw how excited she was, I felt like someone stabbed a knife through my heart. Xiao You, why am I so sensitive when it comes to you?’

The beeping of his cell phone interrupted Ximen’s thoughts. He picked up his phone to find a text message from Xiao You.

‘Knowing you, I’m pretty sure that you haven’t eaten your lunch yet cuz of all the work. It’s 2:30, so go get yourself some food and EAT! I don’t wanna have to visit you in the hospital again. Talk to ya later, Mr. Workaholic. =P’

A small smile appeared on Ximen’s face; Xiao You wasn’t wrong, he had indeed skipped his lunch. He was glad Xiao You didn’t call instead though, he didn’t feeling like talking to her just yet.

Ximen almost dropped his phone in surprise as it suddenly rang. He looked at the screen to see who’s calling.

Ximen: Lei!

Lei: How did it go?

Ximen: I couldn’t do it. I chickened out twice and then she dropped a bomb on me.

Lei, knowing not to make fun of Ximen: What’d she say?

Ximen: She’s got a date tonight with some guy from school. I swear I wanna kill him right now.

Lei: Oh man, I’m sorry, bro. But are you just gonna give up now? It’s only a date, Ximen, it’s not like she got engaged. If you love her enough, you will fight for her no matter what.

Ximen: Lei…

Lei: Just turn up the Ximen-pimpness a notch and Xiao You will be yours in no time. (Lei chuckled at his own joke.)

Ximen, not amused: I’m ready to punch someone out and you’re cracking a joke on me!

Lei, laughing: Go get her, bro. I’ll talk to you later.

Ximen, smiling: Alright, thanks Lei. Bye.

-------------------------------------------------

Glancing at his watch, Ximen saw that it was 7:55.

'Time for that stupid meeting which should have been held 3 hours ago! If I didn’t need their help, I would’ve fired them already. Those people work like snails.’

He gathered the documents that he needed and walked towards his door. He jumped back after he opened the door and blinked a couple of times to see what almost scared the daylights out of him.

In his doorway stood Xiao You, one hand in mid-air looking like she was about to knock the door and the other holding a bag.

Ximen, surprised: Xiao You! I thought you had a date!

Xiao You, with a smile: Hao Min had a family emergency so he cancelled, but we’re going out tomorrow.

Ximen could almost feel his blood boil at the mention of the other guy.

Ximen, coldly: Uh huh. So what brings you here?

Xiao You, lifting the bag in her hand: I brought you dinner since I know you probably skipped both lunch and dinner. Ximen, you know it’s not good for you to skip meals.

Ximen, bitterly: And why do you care? Go care about your Ho Men or whatever his name is. I don’t need your food. I’ve got a meeting anyways. Now, if you would excuse me, you’re making me late.

Xiao You, astounded at Ximen’s attitude: What the hell is wrong with you recently? It’s like you’ve become a whole different person. Oh, why do I even bother? You know what, you’re right, Ximen. You don’t need me and I’m just wasting my time here. This is the last time you’ll hear from me.

Ximen: Fine. See if I care.

Xiao You: Fine!

With that said, Xiao You turned on her heels and walked away while Ximen stared at her retreating back, all the while with Lei’s words repeating themselves in his head.

‘Go get her, go get her…’

However, despite how much his heart wanted to call her back, his mouth didn’t open and his legs wouldn’t move; his pride held him back.

‘Smooth, Ximen, that was real smooth. Piss her off and drive her away. And like hell you don’t need her! You wouldn’t be the person you are today if it weren’t for her! You screwed up big time, Ximen.’

Xiao You’s words were like twisting the knife that was in his heart. As much as he wanted to just go somewhere and drink away his frustrations, he knew he had to get his butt to that meeting, which he was already late for.

Gathering himself, he rushed towards the conference room and tried to put on a mask that will last him through the night.
