Chapter 14

Epilogue

"Hey look! It's snowing!" Ginger exclaimed, pointing to the window. Clifford and Lyra looked up from the chessboard and glanced out of the window. Beautiful snowflakes fall gently down, blanketing the ground in soft white snow.

"Beautiful..." said Lyra. Clifford nodded in agreement.
"Let's go out after this round of chess!" said Ginger, moving her knight.
"Alright," answered Lyra, analyzing Ginger's move. Clifford sat between the two girls, looking at the chessboard.
"Right... and checkmate!" Lyra cried triumphantly. Ginger groaned.
"That's the third time in a row!" she complained.
"Ok ok... Now let's all go out and enjoy the snow," Clifford said, getting up.
"Alright!" Lyra sprang up and went to grab her windbreaker and gloves, followed by Clifford, and trailing behind was the still grumbling Ginger.

"Clifford!" a voice yelled. Clifford turned around and was hit right smack in the face by a snowball.
"What the-" Clifford began, but before he could wipe the snow off his face, he was hit by a second snowball.
Clifford quickly wiped off all the snow on his face to search for the culprit. Standing a few feet away from him was Lyra and Ginger, with identical evil smirks on their face, holding a snowball each.
So you guys wanna fight huh He bent down, scooping up a handful of snow, smirking.

I am bored to death! Lyra declared, walking aimlessly around in her room, looking around for things to keep her occupied. It was the winter holidays and her parents were out working. Her eyes landed on the telephone.
Hey I could call Clifford She said happily and proceeded to dial his number.
Hello? May I speak to Clifford please?
Speaking, Lyra is that you? Clifford asked.
Yeah, and Im bored to death here! Theres absolutely nothing to do! Lyra cried.
Hmm you wanna go to the playground? You know that playground we used to go during our childhood days.
Oh! Sure, I wonder if its still the same.
Yeah... Alright, meet me at the bus stop opposite your house in 10 minutes time? Is that alright?
Sure. Ill cya then! Bye!
Bye Lyra.

Shoot! Im LATE!!! cried Lyra, fumbling with her glove. After draping her scarf around her neck, she dashed out of the door, locked it and ran to the bus stop.
Clifford was already patiently waiting there.
Im so sorry Im late! Lyra apologized.
Its alright, Clifford said, smiling gently. Lets go.
Together, the two of them head down the snow-covered path to their childhood playground.

Man! It really hasnt changed a single bit! Lyra exclaimed upon reaching the playground.
Yeah, good thing though, Clifford said. Both of them went to the swings and sat on it.
It feels just like when we were 5 years old, Lyra said, as the wind whipped through her hair. Clifford nodded in agreement.
Soon, they got off the swing and sat on the nearby bench. There was an awkward silence between them and neither knew what to say.
"Uh... so your head injuries are fully healed?" Clifford finally said, looking at Lyra.
"Yeap, they don't hurt anymore," Lyra answered.
"That's good... You had me scared when I was told that you were hospitalised because you got knocked down by a car," He said, looking down at the snow-covered ground.
"Well, I was really upset that day, so I jaywalked across the road to get to the beach."
Don't ever do that again alright? I wouldn't know what to do if you hadn't woke up from your coma... I'll be so lost..." Clifford mumbled, almost inaudibly. Lyra listened on.
If you were gone... my life would be empty..." He paused. Youre more important than anyone else to me
Why?
Because He faltered. Lyra guessed what was coming.
Because? Because what?
Before she knew it, Clifford had already leaned in and kissed her.
