Mixed emotions

"This," he said and kissed her on the cheek.

Before Lyra could respond, he stepped off the porch, waved goodbye and hurried on his way.

Meanwhile, the shocked Lyra had turned twenty shades of red and was standing frozen on the porch.

"He... He kissed me?! Oh no... I'm gonna go nuts..." she thought as she touched her cheek lightly.

Still blushing, Lyra slipped in the door key, swung opened the main door and skipped happily into the house, humming a soft tune. Dumping her bag beside her desk, she took a cold shower and then started on her homework.

"Oh yeah... that geography worksheet..." Lyra muttered to herself and dug around her bag for the worksheet. She completed her homework in an hour and picked up a book. The Ghost by Danielle Steel.

"Hmm... interesting..." she browsed through the summary and started the first page. She was soon engrossed in the story, not even hearing her parents' return from work nor Jeffrey's from extra classes.

"Lyra! Dinner!" Her mum's loud voice floated into the bedroom. Amazingly, Lyra did not seem to hear it.

"Lyra!" Came her mum's voice again, but Lyra was in the world of Sarah Ferguson and Francois de Pellerin, back in the seventeen eighties.

"She must be reading again! That girl! When she reads, she's oblivious to her surroundings!" Mrs Rynell said as she stormed up the stairs into Lyra's bedroom, where she was currently lounging on the bed, reading.

"Lyra! It's time for dinner!" Mrs Rynell scolded. Only then, did Lyra notice the persence of another person: her mum, standing at the doorway with her hands on her hips, wearing an irritated expression.

"Oh, hi mum! Yes, what were you saying?" Lyra asked, eyes never leaving the words in the book.

"I said, it's time for dinner and for you to stop reading for a while!"

"Oh... okie... be down in a minute..."

"No, I mean now!"

"Oh, okok..." Lyra got off her bed and started to walk out of the room, but her eyes were still glued to the book.

"Nope, that book stays right here in your room!" Mrs Rynell said, shaking her head.

"Oh... pleeease... it's really too interesting for me to put down..." Lyra pleaded.

"No, and that's final."

"Ok, fine... fine..." Lyra, very reluctantly, put down her book, and went downstairs with her mum.

They arrived at the dining table where Lyra's dad and Jeffrey were already seated.

"Wow! Fish and chips! Yay!" Lyra cried out in delight and started digging in. Her parents and Jeffrey ate in silence. Something's amiss. The atmosphere was tensed-up in contrast to the usual warm and noisy one.

"Mum? Dad? Jeff? Is there something wrong? Why are all of you so quiet?" Lyra asked finally. Her parents looked at each other. Jeffrey simply stared down at his food. Silence followed.

"Your uncle Lenny... he's warded in the hospital..." her mum finally said. Lyra's eyes went wide.

"Uncle Lenny's in hospital?! Why?!" Lyra asked frantically. Uncle Lenny was her favourite uncle who had always played with her since young and had bought her lots of sweets too.

"He was diagnosed with pulmonary tuberculosis..." her dad said in reply to her question.

"He's in the Intensive Care Unit now... the doctors are doing all they can to try to save him..." Jeffrey finished.

"No... how could this happen?!" Lyra muttered, sad and angry at the same time. Her parents and her brother looked at her sadly. They knew he was her favourite uncle, thus had been rather hesitant when breaking the bad news to her.

After dinner, Lyra had no more mood to continue The Ghost, she needed to talk to someone badly, Clifford, in particular. He could always make her feel better. After crying for some time, she picked up the phone and dialed his number.

Lyra: Hello, may I speak to Clifford please?

Clifford: I am

Lyra: Hi Clifford

Clifford: Lyra? Is that you?

Lyra: Yep, that's me.

Clifford: Hey, everything alright? You sound like you've been crying!

Lyra: I wish I were alright... My uncle Lenny's in the hospital and his life is at stake...

Clifford: Oh my... that is terrible! But I'm sure he's gonna get well!

Lyra: I really hope so... he has diabetes... and now... pulmonary tuberculosis!

Clifford: That's terrible... but I'll pray for his recovery!

Lyra: Thanks Clifford!

They continued to talk on the phone for the next hour until her mum came hollering that the phone will be on fire any moment if they continue talking like that.

Lyra: Thanks for everything Clifford...

Clifford: No problem Lyra! That's what friends are for, isn't it?

Lyra managed a weak smile as she hang up. She certaintly felt better. She would be visiting Uncle Lenny tomorrow at the hospital. Thank goodness tomorrow's a Saturday. She flopped onto her bed sleepily, mind full of Uncle Lenny and Clifford and drifted off to sleep...
