Chapter 2

Change

[ Kim JaeJoong P.O.V. ]

I stumbled into the house, looking around like a mad dog for water. My throat was dry from the amount of alcohol I drank. The vomiting on the way back didn’t help either, it made me sick, the after taste wasn’t pleasant at all.

It was 3 in the morning. I just returned from my night of alcohol and smoke in the nearby club, didn’t return home with any girl because I didn’t feel like it. I was in no mood for that kind of stuff tonight. I was too busy thinking about what that freak said to me back in the carnival, how my true love will be a man. This bothered me all night, it caused me to become highly anti-social and over drink as well as smoking an entire pack of cigarettes in one night for 6 hours.

“Master JaeJoong, Mr Kim would like to see you in his office.”

Turning around, I saw one of the maids looking at me with worried eyes. Why was she worried? I thought no one cared about me in this world.

“What does the old coot want with me? Huh?” I spat at the maid in a rude tone.

Expecting her to at least cringe at my rudeness, she only shook her head side to side, “I don’t know Master, but that was what Mr Kim said to me before he entered his room, I didn’t have the chance to ask.”

Groaning, I began to make my way up the stairs, forgetting about the liquid that I needed just then. Too busy wondering what the old hag wanted to talk to me about.

Upon reaching the door to his study room, I could hair a series of noises from inside, clicking, scratching, thumping.
Ignoring the noise, I carelessly opened the door without knocking to find it unlocked. Entered inside to see it half empty with a dozen luggage’s at the side of the room.

“What’s going on here?” I slurred my words as I trudged towards the figure that seemed to be packing something inside yet another luggage case.

“You’re home?” the figure said without turning to look at me.

“YAH! I ASKED YOU A QUESTION!” I shouted.

The figure turned to reveal my dad, no big surprise there.

“You’ve been drinking?”

“Well nah! I’ve been out smoking cannabis!” I said sarcastically as I thrashed my arms about, “OF COURSE I’VE BEEN DRINKING YOU BLOODY FOOL! LIKE I DO EVERY NIGHT!”

He shot me a disgusted look before turning back to his luggage.

I stepped backwards, spinning around to examine the room around me.
The drawers were opened and empty, not to mention the wardrobes with the doors swung open to reveal nothing but darkness inside. My dad’s desk was cleared, not a paper in sight. The bat cages that were once in here were gone; they were no longer hanging from the ceiling.

“We’re moving.”

I froze. Suddenly I could feel myself become more alert now.

“What the fuck are you talking about?” I stomped over to the old man.

“We’re moving to Jeju Island.”

Jeju Island? The place where the hooded guy mentioned back at the carnival? No it can’t be…

“Something strange has been going on with the bats there, they would like me to take a look at them.” He continued as he began to pack more items into another luggage, “We’ll be there for a while, maybe 1 year? Or more, I’m not sure.”

Wasn’t a surprise to me, his love for bats made him go nuts and made him move to live with them. I should’ve known that this would’ve had something to do with the bats.

“Wait. We? I’m going as well?” I asked.

“Yes, we. I thought moving to Jeju Island will be great for both of us. A new life you know? Fresh start.” I noticed a small smile appear on his face, the first that I’ve seen for 15 years. “We can both change, it’s not too late. I can change; I’m willing to treat you better when we move there as long as you’re willing to change.”

I couldn’t believe what I heard. The man was mad I tell you. He was probably out of his mind.

Did he even think about what I would think? Did he really think that I would be like one of those kids who would go with him? Believe in this fairytale of his and end up finding out that life is so much harder if I moved away from the life I had now? Hell no.

“You can go on your own and believe that this wish is true. I’m not.” I said as I backed away, “Do you really think it would work? You must be out of your mind. Go see a psychiatrist. Only mental people can think of these things.”

He must’ve noticed my shocked look since he laughed lightly.

“Don’t laugh you bastard. I’m serious.” I said coldly as the man in front of me continued to laugh.

“Jae. I’m serious too. I’ve put a lot of thought into this.”

“NO YOU HAVEN’T! YOU’RE STILL HAVING SOME KIND OF AFFAIR WIH THOSE FUCKING BATS!” I yelled at him in anger. “I BET YOU’LL TREAT ME AS ONE OF THOSE BATS TOO! STICK ME IN A CAVE AND FEED ME DEAD RATS!”

He shot me a surprised expression before falling into a sad looking one. His eyes looked sad and lonely as the fell to the floor. Shoulders hunched, smile wiped clean off his face, no longer in his happy mood that he was in before.

Did my words get to him? If it did, good.

“But I’m ready to change. Just because I’m moving due to the bats, doesn’t mean I won’t have time for you. I’m sure I would, I have all the time there, I’m sure of it. I really wanted to treat you like my own son for once, give you the love that you needed, fill in the wide gap that was created in between us many years ago.” He said softly, still looking down, “Aren’t you sick of here Jae? Aren’t you sick of your lifestyle? The alcohol, cigarettes, whores that you sleep with every night? I’m doing it all for your own good. I don’t want you like this. I’m sure that your mother doesn’t want this too.”

Lies, all filthy stinking lies. I bet when we get there he would go back on his words and neglect me like normal.
And of course I’m sick of my lifestyle. But it’s only there because of you. I don’t want to move on into a new life, I don’t want to change. I’m sure that if I continue on like this maybe I’ll die sooner or later and leave this shitty world.

“Bullshit. How do you know if mum would want me to do this too? She’s not even here? She’s up there!” I pointed up at the ceiling, “Stop living in the past. She’s gone and there’s nothing that you can do about it. How do you know that she cares for me too? Huh?”

He remained silent as he looked up at me with wet eyes. Was he near crying? The cold hearted bastard was about to cry? I can’t believe it. Did a bat bite him? Did a brick fall on him?

“Jae, please give me a chance. I’m sorry for all the things that I did to you back then. Let’s forget the past. Live a new life.” He urged on, tears threatening to escape his eyes at any moment, “I’ll give you till tomorrow night to think about this. I want an answer then.”

Without saying a word I left the room.

Once I dropped myself onto my empty bed I brought my hands up to cover my face, screaming into them as I rolled side to side in frustration.

Why did he want to change now? Why not earlier? Like before I even had this lifestyle. What am I to do?

The very next morning at school, the gang was already at the top of the school building waiting for me. I was late for school, I arrived during the middle of the first class, not that it mattered, as if I would want to go to that maths class that I’m supposed to be in right now.

“Woke up late? Man, I didn’t even see you take a chick back home with you.” World remarked as I walked over towards them.

As usual, they were smoking, all but Hero of course. He just sat in a corner, rolling tobacco up in cigarettes ready for us to smoke. That’s one of the many things he’s good at doing for the gang, making us cigarettes, he makes really good ones too. Even buys the wrappers in all sorts of flavours.

“Something came up.” I said without any emotion at all.

They watched me like hawks as I took a seat next to Hero and began to roll tobacco up as well.

“YoungWoong, you’re suppose to smoke them not make them. That’s Hero’s job for fucks sake!” CheonWoo said as he came over and snatched the wrapper out of my hands and threw me a cig.

I looked down blankly at the thing, as if it was a dangerous weapon, or something that I never saw or touched before.
My mind filled with thoughts at that very moment. Should I carry on with this life? Smoke a packet of cigarettes every day or stop now before I regret it.

A lighter then fell into my hands, on top of the cigarette. Was I to light the cigarette or not?

The others were watching me oddly. I couldn’t blame them. By now I would’ve lighted the stick and have it in my mouth, sucking on it.

“What’s wrong with you?” Jerry said as he came over and forcefully placed the cig into my mouth.

Naru then made his way over and took out his pink lighter from his pocket, lighting the cigarette for me.

I took in the unhealthy substance; it only made me cringe in disgust. The tobacco didn’t taste like anything that it used to be. It tasted…foul.

“It tastes like shit.” I said as I threw the lit cig on the floor while the others gasped in horror at my act.

Even Hero was gaping at me.

“Hyung. I made that cig especially just for you.” Hero whimpered.

I tuned to look at him. His head hung looking down onto his lap, where a pile of tobacco laid on his right lap and a pile of wrappers on his left.
For some odd reason, I didn’t feel sorry about it. I only felt sorry that he had to make this sticks with his own two hands.

“Here, how about these?” HanBang said as he held out a packet of cigs to me, the packet that I bought for him yesterday, the best cigs from the best company.

Shrugging, I took one out from the pack and lit it in my mouth. Hoping that it would taste a lot better, but I was wrong. It tasted like crap too.

Without thinking, I chucked it across the floor like I did with the one before, with the same expression, full of disgust.

“YAH! YOU JUST WASTED MY CIG!” HanBang yelled at me before running over to pick it up, placing it into his mouth after chucking away his almost finished one.

“What’s wrong with you huh?” World said as he came over to me and yanked me by the collar in anger, “What the fuck happened to you?”

I didn’t know the answer myself.

“I don’t know. I just don’t like the taste of it anymore.” I said, not daring to look at his red eyes.

“Don’t like it? Don’t like it my ass! Tell me what’s wrong with you or I’ll punch the living daylights out of you!” he roared into my face as I watched CheonWoo come over and tried to pry World off me.

Once World let go of me, he stormed away, down back into the school building, cursing under his breath as the others followed him, leaving me and Hero on the rooftop.

“Hyung.” Hero called out to me from behind, “Are you okay?”

I turned to face the worried kid who had now dropped the pile of wrappers and tobacco to the floor, standing up, wiping his hands on his trousers.

“Yeah.” I said as I came over and tidied the mess on the floor up, “Sorry about earlier, I didn’t mean to hurt your feelings. It’s just that I don’t like cigarettes anymore.”

“Did something happen?” he asked further.

Once I tidied up the pile, I sat on the edge of the building, looking down onto the street below me as Hero did so as well.

“My dad wants me to move to Jeju Island with him and start a new life.” I began to explain, “He wants to do some stupid research on some bats there. He also wants to start things afresh with me. Start a new life. Become a proper father and son. We might be back in a few years time.”

“That sounds nice.”

Thinking that it was sarcasm, I turned to look at him. He had those far seeing eyes as well as a happy face. He wasn’t being sarcastic at all; it looked like he was trying to imagine it for himself, a happy life.

“It is?” I asked.

“Yeah.” He said as he began to swing his legs, “I would love to have that chance. If I did I would take it and treasure it. You’re lucky to be given a chance to bond with your father. Unlike me, my chances are slim, very slim.”

This kid was abandoned by his parents, I knew how he felt. Just hearing what he said made me rethink about everything.

“Wouldn’t it be nice to live a new life? Given a second chance?” he carried on, “Come on Hyung, this is probably the only opportunity you have left in your life, take it. Don’t you hate this life that you’re living now?”

“I can say the same about you.” I said before heaving a long sigh.

“I chose this path because it was the only path I had left. I’m happy living with CheonWoo and his parents, his parents gave me all the love I needed. I don’t mind this gang, they look after me, care about me, and I can’t thank you guys enough.” He smiled to himself as he laughed a bit, “However, you now have two paths, a good and bad path. If I was you, I’d choose the good path.”

“And what’s that?”

“Go to Jeju Island with your dad. Don’t worry about me and the others. I’m sure the others will understand when I explain to them.”

I couldn’t help but stare at this kid with a smile on my face. Maybe someone did care about me in this world after all.

“I’ll go tell them now.” He said as he jumped off the ledge, walking into the building in search of the others.

Looks like the kid chose for me. Hope he chose the right path for me.

Moments later, I could hear the sound of running feet tapping against the metal staircase that lead up to the roof, and distant arguing noises.

Next, I found World running through that door, locking his eyes onto me as he stormed over to me, grabbing me by the collar again.

The others then came running into the scene, with Hero following closely behind.

“YoungWoong you little shit. Why didn’t you tell any of us about this but Hero huh? Aren’t we your friends?” he breathed onto my face with a devilish smirk.

Friends? You guys are my friends? I didn’t think that. I thought you were just guys that liked my style of fighting and stuff and thought I was capable of joining the gang, one of the gang’s secret weapon or tool.

“But whatever, we all agreed to it so don’t worry.” He said as he let me down to the floor.

Thinking that he was calm and less violent now, I was wrong. Before I knew it I found his fist driving into my stomach, releasing pain throughout my body, causing me to bend over in pain.

“Hyung!” Hero called as he came over to pull the fist out of me.

“That was for not telling us when I asked you to tell us.” World said as he took a step back and looked down at me with a grin.

I looked up to see a hand in front of me, held out by World himself.

“We’re all friends no matter what.” He said in an assuring tone, “If you ever get into deep shit in your new school, call for us, we’ll board the very first plane to Jeju to back you up.”

I took the hand into my own, shaking it with a crooked smile. Who knew that World was such a nice guy. Why do I have to see this side of him just when I have to leave? Why do I find out that these guys care about me just when I leave?

“I think we should throw a farewell party tonight!” Naru suggested as he jumped about excitedly.

“Yeah! Throw a big one! With endless drinks and plenty of big breasted girls!” Jerry added.

We all laughed at that very line. I guess one night of drinks and hot girls won’t be so bad. It’s just the cigarettes that I have a problem with. I might as well drink to the point that I can drink no more tonight and pick out myself a random chick for a one night stand.

When I came back home, I found the house almost empty. I guess the old fool had been packing stuff all day.

“Ah you’re home.” I heard him say as he began to walk up to me from the kitchen, “You decided yet? I didn’t start packing the stuff in your room yet. But the plane flight leaves tomorrow morning.”

“You could’ve told me that we’re leaving tomorrow morning.” I muttered.

“Sorry Jae-“

“I’m coming with you.” I said clearly but quickly.

“What?” he said in shock.

“I’m coming to Jeju Island with you.”

In a matter of seconds I found myself being hugged in the embrace of this man for the first time. I don’t remember the first time that he hugged me. But this will be the only moment that I will never forget.
I knew the old geezer was crying since I felt my shoulders become damp from his tears. Who knew that he could be such a softie? There is so much that I don’t know about this man, this man that I’m suppose to call “appa.”

“Oh and, can I throw a party here tonight?” I asked without hesitating.

“Oh not here, almost everything is packed, how about throwing it at the Seoul’s best club? I’ll give you the money for it.” He said before digging into his back pocket, fishing out his wallet.

I couldn’t believe it. For the first time in my life he was willing to give me money to spend on, from his very own pocket. Normally I would get it through the bank if I was lucky enough.

He flicked through the wons that was in his wallet before shoving the whole wallet into my hands.

“Take it all, I think it’s enough.” He said with a smile.

He must be really out of his mind. Did he forget the fact that I would be out drinking, having one night stands with girls and using fake IDs? I better not say anything, or he’ll think twice about it.

Placing the wallet in my pocket, I began to make my way up the stairs, ready to plan the party tonight.

But when I was halfway up the stairs, I turned around to see the face of my dad and spoke the very words that I had never said to him before, “Thanks.”

He replied with a warm smile as he gave me a thumbs up.

Looks like things were going well so far. I hope that if he found out what I was up to tonight he wouldn’t rethink about the whole “change” thing. I liked how things are going so far. And I hope to keep it that way.

[ 3rd Person P.O.V. ]

In a dark alleyway at 10pm, next to Seoul’s best late night club, Mirotic. Blood curling screams were heard echoing from it. No one heard the cries of the prostitute. She was left to be drained of her blood by a dark figure with sharp fangs.

After the screams ended, and the prostitute was no longer alive, the figure dropped the limp body to the wet floor, examining her now cold and pale skin.

“That tasted nice.” The figure smirked as he licked the remaining blood around his mouth, “For a prostitute that is.”

“Aigoo. YunHo is getting too desperate that he is even willing to suck the blood from such a dirty little thing like a prostitute!” A voice sounded from above.

YunHo looked upwards to see two dark figures float down towards him.

“I was hungry, very hungry.” YunHo said defensively.

The two figures now landed in front of him. The group in the alleyway were cloaked in black, camouflaging with the darkness. Only their eyes were visible to the human eye as the glow red.

In front of YunHo stood the two figures. One that had broad shoulders, with a larger built than the other. While the other seemed a lot thinner and frail.

“Hey, I heard that there’s going to be a party thrown in here tonight.” The larger one said as he pointed at the wall next to him, indicating the club Mirotic.

“Yeah, and there’s going to be lots of teens. Enough to fill our hungry stomachs.” The smaller one added, “Unlike this dirty little thing here, her blood is way too impure for you. How could you YunHo?” he kicked the body that lay next to him on the floor.

“I told you HeeChul, I was hungry okay?” YunHo said in an annoyed tone.

The frail looking one, HeeChul snorted.

“Oh and where’s LeeTeuk, KangIn? Aren’t you guy’s inseparable?” YunHo teased the larger man.

“He’s in the club right now, warming up the crowd with his drinks.” KangIn grinned.

“Anyway, want to join us YunHo?” HeeChul asked, stepping in front of KangIn.

“Yeah sure why not?” YunHo smirked, “It’ll be fun.”
