It all started that faithful day…
“Wish me good luck!!” my friend said to me before he lined up. The day was hot and we’ve traveled far just to have a dose of luck, maybe for him.
“So who are you planning to audition for?”
“Dao Ming Si, he’s the lead man!”
“I’m taking Hua Ze Lei…not too much memorization for him…”
I overheard the two guys talking bout the roles they’re auditioning for, my friend will be auditioning for Qing He.
Everywhere I seem to look at is crowded. Is it really a big deal being a celebrity? These people here are ambitious, there are many possible jobs yet they’re risking everything just for fame.
I’ve noticed a middle-age girl eyeing me; she has been eyeing me for quite a time already and glancing at her folder once in awhile. I hate that look, makes me think I’m wanted for a crime!
I sulkily sat at a bench in a corner. I was getting sleepy already and my stomach was growling, what’s taking him so long?
To my surprise the girl eyeing me before was walking towards me already, smiling. She stop in front of me and held out her hand.
“Ni hao! My name is Angie Cai,” she said as I shook her hand.
“Chou yu min” I answered back.
She sat beside me and stared at me for quite some time again.
“umm…is there something wrong with my face?” I asked her weirdly.
“no…actually…I was wondering if who you are auditioning for…” she giggled and told me.
“oh…I'm not auditioning for anyone…I'm just accompanying my friend.” I smiled at her. After I told her she looked disappointed.
“really? Then that’s a loss…ill be glad to scout you for my series…you resemble the other male lead so much…” she stood up and showed me a picture of a manga character with a hair just like mine, same stature, brows, as many as I could count. Yah! I want to agree with her, unfortunately, that would be saying yes to acting. I don’t know what to answer back.
“this is Hua Ze Lei…he is the second male lead…he has the easiest lines but the hardest to portray…he has this cold attitude which is hard to find in an actor…we had a hard time looking for him, up until now, no one came close to getting the role” she said saving me for a response, but still I'm speechless.
“and…” the only word that came out of my mouth. She smiled at me again.
“you might be wondering why you…it’s not only because you resemble him, you just have this cold aura in you…”she picked a calling card in her pocket and handed it to me.
“call me if you’re interested…the salaries are good and it’s such a big opportunity to lose” she told me before she headed out to the crowd again.
She’s kidding me, or maybe not. I really looked like that Hua Ze Lei guy, or he looked rather like me. A big opportunity…I don’t think so.
I and my friend drove back to Yilan. He didn’t get the role and I'm not planning to tell him I was scouted, it’ll only add to his burden.
I was having dinner with my mom and my Ge (Chou Wei Min).
“so how did it go, did he get the role?” Ge asked.
“no...”I laughed, remembering the incident earlier.
“what is funny Zaizai?” my mom eyed me across the table.
“nah…someone scouted me there for the second male lead, saying I look just like him.” I replied and went back eating my mom’s curry.
The two of them were suddenly quiet. Then suddenly mom smiled.
“isn’t that great! Did you say yes?” she asked me enthusiastically
“no…I didn’t” I ignored and kept on eating.
“zaizai! It’s a big opportunity!” she stared at me disbelievingly.
“exactly the words she said!” I laughed.
“did she leave a calling card? Call her! Say yes!” and then I regretted following her.
A week later, I signed the contract.
I was attending an acquaintance party of the series where staff/crew members and actors meet each other. Miss Angie introduced me to the director and other crew. I was the first actor that arrived. Then they kept on coming.
I was introduced to new stars like me and old stars that I knew already. Then I was introduced to F4, specifically, F3.
“zaizai…I want you to meet Yan Cheng Xu, he’s playing Dao Ming Si.” A guy with same height held his hand.
“you can call me Bao Long…” he smiled
“This is Zhu Xiao Tian, he’s Xi Men and this is Vanness Wu, as preferred he’ll be playing Mei Zuo.”
I chat with them for quite some time but decided to shut up after learning they’re very fast at mandarin and I’m not. I learned small details, Jerry/ Bao Long was a model, Ken or Xiao Tian grew up in Singapore and Vanness was an ABC (American born Chinese).
I sat in my table while they went around meeting others. This is getting boring every minute. My mind was in a battle, staring at the wide open door, I was thinking if I should go and excuse myself, at least I met my co actors already or should I stay and bore myself to death. I was about to stand up and walk out when someone I saw stopped me.
Here is where I get to meet her…
A petite figure walked in to the room. She has that jet black hair swaying behind her. Wearing plain pink spaghetti strapped dress and a high heeled sandal, she appeared simple. All smiles she walked in the room catching everyone’s eye, including mine. She waved across the room to someone, I recognized as Angie. Now will I go or will I stay? It’s impossible that she’ll walk here to me and start a conversation, and I’m lousy in starting a conversation, and why would I want a conversation with her?!
I sighed to myself. I'm being pathetic! I drank my wine all up.
“is someone sitting beside you?” I looked up and an angelic face was staring down at me. She looked even more beautiful closer. I wonder how closer I can get to her face…
“No…no one…” I said pulling a chair for her.
“Thank you...” taking the chair beside me and held out her hand.
“I'm Xu Xi Yuan, you can call me Barbie or Da S, I’ll be playing San Cai” she smiled at me, her smile was genuine.
“My name is Chou Yu Min, Zaizai for short, I’ll be playing…”what’s with her smile that I suddenly forgot the name of that look a like guy?!
“Hua Ze Lei” she answered for me with a giggle following it. “Miss Angie told me,” she added.
“Oh…”I smiled, her giggle sent tingles to my spine.
“What’s your English name?” she asked out of the blue.
“Umm…Vic” I whispered, saying English is one of the things I hate to do.
“Vic…nice name” she giggled again.
