I tagged along behind him and followed him to the dinning room. I saw all of them sitting impatiently at the table, but immediately sat properly and swallowed when they saw Yunho enter the room. I told Yunho to sit beside Sunye at the round table, and that’s what he did. If I don’t tell him to do anything, he’ll stand still by the table for sure.
Yunho slowly pulled the chair and sat down, quietly. I saw him steal a glance at Eunji, but he immediately looked at the loaf of bread across the table when Eunji began to look at him. Yunho does have a heart. I can see that now. He loves his family.
Hadley began to reach for a slice of bread.
“Aren’t you going to say grace first before you eat?” I asked them.
They paused and looked at me.
“We only do that in school.” Haylie honestly said.
I laughed. “In school? You can pray anywhere you like. At any time and in any place. He’s always listening.”
“Oh…okay.” Haylie said
Sunye, Haylie, Hadley and Eunji all started praying, but as they put their hand on their forehead.
“Yunho,” I interrupted. “Do it with your right hand.”
Yunho put down his left hand and raised his right. I looked at he others.
“Go on, pray.” I instructed.
And so they did. They said grace before the meal, and then they started eating. I came beside Yunho.
“You don’t know how?” I asked.
To my surprise, Yunho shook his head!
His siblings stopped eating and looked at him.
“I do it sometimes, but I rarely do, only when the spirit-tamers who came here force me to do it. But I can’t really remember because I seldom do it.” Yunho explained
“Not even in school?” I said, winking at Haylie. Haylie and Hadley giggled, putting their hands in front of their little faces.
“I was home-schooled…” came the reply.
Everyone fell silent again.
“Oh…Right,” I said, biting my lip. Home-schooled all his life? That is so miserable! I’m a teacher and I can see the joys of having schoolmates. I have seen children playing with each other, laughing and laughing endlessly. I smile when the children chatter as they talk to each other. I smiled as I see them grow at the company of their playmates, their best friends, their peers.
“Then I’ll teach you.” I smiled at him.
His siblings looked at him like they were watching a suspense movie.
Gently, I took his right wrist and raised it. “Always use right. Always.”
Then I raised it made his fingers touch his forehead. “Repeat after me! In the name of the Father,”
“In the name of the Father,” he repeated.
I lowered it and made it touch below his chest. “And of the Son,”
I made his hand touch his left shoulder, then his right. “And of the Holy Spirit.”
“And of the Holy Spirit,”
I remember doing this to a nursery student.
Haylie burst out laughing, and then Eunji. Soon, all of them were laughing, even Sunye. I was laughing too. I think they all know what I was thinking.
“Amen.” I joined his two hands, in between giggles.
“What’s so funny?” he asked
“Of course this is funny!” I exclaimed. “You are a twenty-four-year-old and I’m teaching you how to make the Sign of the Cross!”
The children laughed harder. I remembered my students. They always laughed like that.
“Shhh…” I put my finger on top of my lips, as I always do with my students. “He’s still praying.”
“Shh!” The little children imitated me and kept quiet.
I faced Yunho. “:Pray.”
“Pray what?” he asked me.
“Thank God for the food.”
Yunho paused. “Uhh…Thank you God for the bread…the eggs…the cheese, and all the food you have blessed us with.”
“That’s not the prayer before meals!” Eunji’s voice rose.
I put my finger again on the top of my lips and whispered. “Let him pray with his heart.”
Eunji nodded obediently.
“Continue, Yunho,” I instructed.
“Um. I’m done,” he said
“Okay. Say ‘Amen’.”
“Amen.”
“Great. Now do the Sign of the Cross again.”
He did it with perfection. His siblings clapped their hands with glee. I clapped along with them.
“Very good,” I praised. “You may eat now. We’ll try to do this more often so you won’t forget how to do it. Do you like that, kids?”
“Yes!” they said in chorus.
I laughed. This was the best accomplishment I’ve ever made as a teacher. I taught a frequently possessed man how to pray. Soon, I’ll be teaching him to know and love God. This first step will surely be followed by many more steps. And soon, I will be able to cure him.
