Do you know the best things about camping? Nature is the best treasure in the world. Nature and Wildlife. Just like they say: The best things in life are free. That is absolutely true. But that saying isn’t only applicable to nature. It is also about the joy of everlasting love, the value of true and non-material happiness, the depreciation of earthly treasures and so on.
As I was saying, nature is the best treasure in the world. That is, in terms of things that you can’t touch. I can already imagine the trickling sound of the rippling brook, the smell of morning dew, the sunlight rays forming wonderful patterns on the forest ground, and the sound of the tweeting of the birds giving the whole place a peaceful mood.
Rrrring! Rrrring!
I picked up the phone.
“Hello?” I answered it.
“~~~~~?” that was my mom’s voice!
“Umma! Hey, I was just thinking about our camping trip. I’m so excited. That’s tomorrow, right?”
“Honey…” her voice was different. “We canceled the trip.”
My heart fell. Gone are the memories of the brook, the trees and the birds.
“Canceled?” I asked, still not believing what I had heard. “But why?”
“Will you take a look out your window?”
“Huh?” I said, but I did what she requested me to do.
I pulled up the Venetian blinds. I saw the boring sight of the city streets and the old establishments Then, I noticed a few wriggling figures at the bottom corner of my eye, so I looked down.
I gasped with overflowing joy! My family was outside! Dad honked the car, and Key leaned on it, waving his arms wildly, while mom waved her left hand for she was holding the cellphone with the other.
I waved manically at them, and then I put down the phone and raced out of the apartment, as fast as lightning.
“OMO! Umma! Appa! Key!” I screamed as I ran to the car which was across the street, me not practicing safety precaution at all.
Had there been a speeding truck coming in my direction, I would have already been squished. Luckily, there weren’t any.
Mom came to me first, and I embraced her, and then I hugged Key, then Dad. I was so happy.
“But what are you doing here?” I asked at last. “What about the camping trip?”
“We decided to visit you here, and then you tour us around this town,” Key explained.” Take us anywhere you like!”
“That’s actually a wonderful idea!”
“Guess who the genius who thought of that…is” Key said, arrogantly.
“Oh, then I suppose that is you.” I started to poke him. “So it was your fault the camping trip was canceled!”
“Ow!” Key laugh as I poked him. “You said it was brilliant!”
“No, I didn’t!” I continued to poke him.
“Yes, you did!”
“I said it was “Wonderful”, not “brilliant”, silly!”
I led my family later on into the apartment and we ate the left over pasta that Yuri and I ordered the day before. Luckily, there was enough for everyone. Yuri was not home because she was tutoring a 3rd grade student during that time in another time.
I made family stay in the small living room, while I scanned the directory or places we could go to.
“Don’t you have a student to tutor just like your roommate, ~~~~~?” my mother asked as she sipped her tea. She always drank tea every time she had nothing to do.
“Well, I was planning to be a summer tutor at first,” I said as I flipped through the pages, “but I already have a summer job so I thought I didn’t have to do it. Besides, this job pays well and it requires most of my time.”
“Oh?” Mother put down her teacup and picked up a magazine. “And what job is that?”
“Well…” I stopped flipping the pages. “Let’s just say I work for a family with a spiritually disturbed son.”
“I don’t think I like the sound of that…” Dad piped in.
“It’s not too bad…”I tried to defend my job. “I am used to things like this, anyway.”
“Well, you do have a point.” Dad nodded as he read the newspaper. “Sometimes I envy your gift, ~~~~~. Your ability could make a lot of money, you know.”
I laughed at my dad. He’s always thinking of now to make money. That’s why we never became financially hard up, anyway. But sometimes I begin to think he’s turning out to be too materialistic.
“Well how about this?” I showed them an advertisement in the directory. “Rossana’s Cabin Café: great view, great cabins, great pools and great coffee.”
“If I didn’t know any better, I’d think getting into that place is going to cost a lot.” Key said to me. “Just imagine! Advertising in the directory is quite a big expense. Only the large and well-off companies and establishments could afford that. Why, even the Rowdy Ruff carnival’s name is not printed in the directory last time I looked. But you have to admit that that Rowdy Ruff in not a run-in-the-mill carnival.”
“So your point is?” I asked, grimacing.
“There are two points here! “ Key stuck out two fingers in front of him. “First, the expense, and second: the quality. The directory isn’t such a good reference.”
“Okay, smart guy.” I smiled at Key. “What’s your solution?”
“Why not ask the locals? They might know a good place to go.”
Key shrugged. “What do you expect?”
I groaned and rested my head on top of my fist. “Perfect.”
And so, that was what I did. I spent the whole afternoon ringing up the people I knew, inquiring about places we could go to. I listed down the suggestion and the cost, and also the addresses. After a while, I discussed with my family the place I had listed down, and it was settled that we go to Safari Resort first thing in the morning.
I packed my bags, because we agreed on staying there for one day, and then leave the next morning.
Well, nature isn’t gone from our trip after all. Were going to Safari, Resort, anyway.
