So down we went. Sunye walked ahead of us and we followed her towards a large, fancy wall painted in different colors. It sure looked fun. Freddy was left to go somewhere else to find a staff member to help him with our belongings.
“This is Downtown Gym,” Sunye said as she walked. “I haven’t been here before, but I think it’s a great place.”
We neared the building and came in a glass entrance with automatic sliding doors. I gasped at the place. It really was called ‘Downtown Gym,’ for a reason. The whole place looked like an old town in the seventies! It was amazing. From outside to inside, the structures were consistent with their theme. It was an open area and it looked totally realistic. Even the personnel were in costumes! There were barbershops, pizzerias, shops, pet store and souvenir stores, all following the 70’s in bold large letters and comic- like illustrations.
But why it was a gym? I looked at the far end of the old-looking street and there it was: the main attraction. The large structure was the center attention at the end of the street and beside it was two more roads going to different directions. This place was so large you can actually get lost in it. I peeked in the glass window of the building at least fifty meters away from me. I could see small mechanical objects inside. They must be the fitness machines!
Freddy came behind us and Eunji pulled him to the merry-go-round. Haylie and Hadley came along with them, squealing with excitement. Sunye started taking pictures.
“Where do you want to go?” I asked Yunho.
He merely shrugged at me, so that means it’s up to me to decide.
I saw a snack bar at the corner so I decided to go first. I pulled Yunho there and, hiding my left hand, which was handcuffed to his right, ordered two corndogs. The old lady smiled kindly at us and prepared our meal. I gave her the payment, took the payment, took the change, put it in my pocket and picked up the corndog with only one hand. I almost wanted to clap at myself for my accomplishment.
But just when I was doing a pretty and good job hiding our weird ensemble, Yunho accidentally used his right hand to pick up his corndog! I felt my left hand being lifted to my surprised! Big, gigantic mistake. I looked at Yunho, and he looked at me, his eyes wide upon realizing the blunder he has committed.
The old lady stared at our wrist, with my left hand hanging under his hand holding the corndog.
“My goodness!” she exclaimed. “Why are you both handcuffed?!”
We were both hanging in mid-air. I opened my mouth but I couldn’t think of an excuse.
“It’s to make sure I don’t get away.” I heard Yunho speak. “I’m retarded.”
“Pffffft!.hahahahaha!” I burst out laughing! A retard?! Did he expect people to believed him? He looks completely normal, for goodness sake!
The old lady’s face was completely baffled.
“Anio (No)…anio (no)…he’s not retard!” I spoke after barely recovering from my giggle fit. “He’s…he my boyfriend!”
“What?!” Yunho gave his violent reaction.
“Yeah” I seemed to like my idea excusable. “It’s our gimmick. You know, like what other couples do…”
“Ah…yes,” the old lady’s face looked enlightened. “Couples in love do things quite unimaginable…
I nodded at her fact she stated. I mean, come on, I have to look believable.
“Bye ma’am!” I quickly said and dragged Yunho away, walking as fast as I could. I glanced at him to see if he was angry with me, but I saw an awkward expression in his face.
“You’re blushing!” I laughed at him, upon noticing his reddening face.
“You totally humiliated me…” his voice cold as ice.
“Huh! Look who’s talking! Wasn’t saying you’re a retard humiliating yourself enough? Be grateful. I even saved you from looking like a total idiot.”
“Alright, thank you,” he said, sarcastically.
“You’re truly welcome!” I snapped back.
We both sat on a nearby benched and quietly ate our snacks while we watched the people walk around and enjoy the place. I admired the palm trees planted in between every building, and the wonderful costumes of the people who work there. I watched the people excitedly taking pictures and posing wherever they went, and the ice cream man pulling his cart and ringing the bell.
For a moment I regretted thinking of tying myself to Yunho. It was a crazy idea! But it was the best idea I can think of. It’s the only idea that can give us peace of mind. And besides, I’m in for a challenge. If something bad happens to me, God knows I’m doing this because I want to help this “sheep” who has gone astray from him. I know I’m doing what is right.
