Footsteps.
The first sound I heard in my state of half-asleep subconsciousness. It was morning already, that’s obvious, because that’s the time we usually wake up, isn’t it?
Do you that span of time which usually lasts about thirty minutes wherein you are asleep but you are fully aware of everything happening around you because you can hear everything? As I recalled everything that happened the day before, I kept still immobile, my eyes completely shut as if my eyes were bound with glue.
And so, that was when I heard footsteps tapping on the floor. That must be Sunye. Who else can get in this room but her? Maybe she’s going to wakes us up already.
The footsteps got louder and stopped when I heard it get near the bed.
I heard Sunye gasp and let out a silent, “OMO!” expression. I wonder why. Sunddenly, I began to hear her Polaroid camera clicking. Now I think I know why. I remember seeing a beautiful lake out of the window the night before. Maybe she saw it thought it was amazing.
I began to feel my toes. I was waking up slowly, probably because I was getting curious about what Sunye was seeing outside. I heard her skip with excitement. What is going on? I felt my fingers this time, but Sunye’s high-pitched, cute, enthusiastic voice startled me and woke me to my senses.
“Well, well, well!” Sunye’s voice thundered with a jolly tone. “Looks like two people here had a lot of fun last night, doesn’t it?” then she let out a silly giggle.
What was she talking about? Two people having fun last night? Is she talking about me and Yunho? Well if she thinks that suffocation and a little argument is fun, then she must be out of her mind.
Slowly, I opened my eyes and saw Sunye, blooming beautifully as she held her Polaroid camera. I looked weirdly at her. Why is she giggling and snickering like that?
Suddenly, I heard Yunho groan. He was beginning to wake up, too, But something’s wrong: his voice sounded awfully close, as if it was only two or four inches away from me.
I quickly turned my head to see if what I was expecting was right. Horror! Yunho and I were sleeping together! It was too late when I realized that I was leaning my head on his shoulder and my shoulder on his arm! Yunho woke up and saw me staring at him. Yunho blushed again and pushed himself away!
“Aaaaaah!” both of us screamed, and we stood up on the bed and backed away from each other. Our handcuffs clanked and so we were hindered from coming off the bed.
Sunye laughed manicly at us. “Don’t worry” she smiled, slyly, “I won’t tell anybody.”
Yunho and I stared at her. What?!
“Joking!!!” She popped her foot, then to our terror, she showed us the pictures she took us. “Wait ‘til they see this!” Then she ran out of the room!
“Sunye!!!” Yunho and I jumped off the bed and raced out of the room to get her.
“Sunye, no! It’s not what you think!” I grabbed her foot as she stood by the door.
“Come on!” she laughed. “It’s too obvious!”
“No,” Yunho shook his head, “It’s just because it was too cold last night and – I don’t know how, but we somehow ended up like that! Trust me!”
“Oh, really?” Sunye stopped and looked at us in a different way. “Then why did you join the beds? And you two were pretending last night that you didn’t want to sleep together! Now, you just joined the beds and then tell me that was accidental!”
“No! We ---“ I opened my mouth, but Yunho interrupted.
Yunho tried to explain. “Yes, we did do that but ---“
“I knew it!!!” Sunye did not let his brother finish his sentence. “You two were hiding something!”
With those words, Sunye skipped merrily to the children’s room. I was still going to run after her but Yunho told me to stop because it wouldn’t help.
Later that morning, we started packing up because we were going home on that day. Freddy got the car ready and all of us had ourselves and our bags prepared.
“Is everybody in the car?” Freddy asked as he adjusted his rearview mirror, making the rosary beads hanging on it dangle and sway.
“We’re all here!” Haylie answered enthusiastically, turning her head sideways with Hadley and Eunji. Sunye leaned front seat and counted all of us, then forced Freddy and told him to step on the gas.
Freddy started the engine and we started our drive home. I took one last glance at the Downtown Gym. I said to myself that someday, I will take my family there. I might’ve had a few not-so-extravagant memories in this place , but it doesn’t matter. As long as I’m with my family everything will turn out great.
“We will be getting ourselves to the Jung house first ~~~~~” Freddy called to me. “I remember I have some tools there that I can use to unlock those handcuffs that you’re in.”
I smiled, gratefully. “Kamsahamnida (Thank you). You’re so kind.”
The trip home to the Jung residence was long and tiring, unlike the trip to Downtown Gym. It was always like that, anyway. All of us were awfully quiet, and the kids were sleeping in front of us.
I kept on texting my family with my cellphone using my right hand. It was a good thing my left hand was the one unavailable, because I’m right-handed.
Than I thought of something.
“Are you right-handed, Yunho?” I asked him.
He frowned weirdly at my question which shot out of nowhere, but he answered me nevertheless. “Yes…why?”
“Nothing…I kept on texting.
More later, we were back at the house and we immediately went down and proceeded inside. Later that day. Freddy led Yunho and me to the garage where he tinkered with the handcuffs again. After a few minutes of waiting, Yunho and I heard that much-awaited click! We’re free! We immediately pulled our hands off and massaged our once enchained wrists.
“Thank you so much! I’m so sorry for the trouble!” I embraced Freddy tightly. He laughed and patted my back.
“Kamsahamnida (thank you)” I heard Yunho say. I haven’t heard him talk for quite a while ever since we got out of the car. I smiled at his gratefulness.
“Chonmaneyo(You’re welcome),” Freddy nodded and smiled.
“Well” I fixed my hair “I better be going home to my apartment.
“Yes, yes. Of course," said Freddy and the three of us went inside and I bid my good-byes and thank you’s to all of them. After that, I grabbed my bag. As I started to go out of the house, I remembered something and I bit my lip. How could I forget?
I left my bag and went inside. I found Yunho starting to go up the stairs.
“Yunho,” I called him.
He turned around.
I ran to him and pulled something out of my pocket, then I held it out in front of him and made sure its beads spreads out. It was a rosary, with dainty metals chains and blue, plastic breads. The cross was very detailed, with Jesus Christ’s body engraved carefully on the cross. Yunho stared at the rosary, his eyes wondering.
“I want you to have this,” I smiled, holding it out in front of him. “I bought it in the shop before we left. Do you know what this is?”
“A….rosary?...So that’s why you were hiding it.”
“Very good!” I cheered. “I want you to pray this as often as you could.”
I reached into my pocket and took my old rosary prayerbook then put it and the rosary in his hands. “That’s actually my apology gift. I’m so sorry…”
He gave me a small smile and looked at the prayerbook. “this will tell me how to pray it?”
I nodded. ”That used to be mine, but you can have it. That is very a powerful prayer and I want you to learn it and pray it too.”
Yunho nodded and said ‘thanks’. He continued walking up the stairs after that, and I started to walkout the door again.
Little did I know that harm was coming.
I stepped on the doormat, and I suddenly heard a very strange voice talk in my head. I felt a very heavy and unsafe feeling. Fear filled my heart.
I paused and froze by the door.
