I slowly tiptoed and laid my lips on Yunho’s right cheeks. I don’t know what just pushed me to do that, but I felt that I had to.

I pulled back and watched his face turn red.

“That’s my thank you gift.” I said to him. I was the one embarrassed at the way he stared at me; I was like a ghost.

“Oh….” He looked down at his toes. “Y-you’re welcome then”.

That felt way awkward. But suddenly and most unexpectedly, Yunho bent over and kissed me on the right cheek as well! As soon as he pulled back, I stared at him, wide-eyed and looked at him as if he were nuts. I mean, what did he do that for?

“That’s also my thank you gift,” Yunho explained to me, “For everything.”

I held my arm.

“You…didn’t have to do that…”

Moments of awkward silence…

“Okay, I…I better be going,” Yunho held the left over food tightly and went down the porch quickly.

“Bye,” he smiled, nervously, and unable to wave good-bye because his hands were occupied.

I stood by the door and bit my lip as I smiled at him. “Bye…” I said as I watched him walk away to his family as fast as he could, bumping into the people he met on the way.

Strange. I felt like a teenager, all giddy and nervously happy. After a long time after highschool I felt the same way I felt when I see my crush smile at me down the hallway, when he calls me by my name and he asks me out and almost freak to death. I feel the butterflies again, the goosebumps, the insanely happy feeling that I once wished would never go away, but it did, and I grew up, I become twenty and matured,

But here it is again, and that’s strange because I never felt that way around Yunho before. Have I now actually developed a small attraction to him, after everything that happened? I wouldn’t like to think so. Teenagers, thinking that bliss is forever once they experience a kiss, but then realize the magic is just an illusion after all. Nothing but a play of emotions.

Am I right or am I just overly practical?

And so with those thoughts, I ignored what happened on my birthday and went on with my day to day life. I finally got back to teaching at the end of the vacation, and this time I decided on teaching kindergarden students. Oh, I’m so exicited: to be among the kids again!

Weeks flew by so fast and the day came when I would first meet my young students. That morning I wore my usual ensemble, tying my hair up in a cute ribbon. Yuri comments that I have been getting girlier everytime.

I rode on the car and went to school with Yuri. A few minutes later, we reached our working place: Sunny Town Elementary School. There weren’t any children yet. We decided to come early so we could make the name tags from the list of student we would get.

Yuri parked her Volkswagen by the sidewalk not far from the school. Then, we both got down and walked on the green grass to the medium-sized door to the school. The guard bid us ‘good morning’ and we did too, As soon as we got ourselves in the hallway we dropped by the small office to pick up the list of students.

Mrs. Derby, the school secretary, handed us our respective lists quietly, then we got out of the coffee-smelling office.

I got out the materials from my plastic bag: scissors, pens, folders and crayons. That was all I need to make seventeen name tags. I had seventeen student on my list so I made seventeen for each of them. Then, I pulled out the ball of yarn from my pocket and started making the laces for each of the name tags.

Yuri and I parted ways once we both finished our work. I carried the tags I made to my respective classroom and saw two students there already, with their parents. The boy held on to his mother tightly, while the girl looked very worried. It reminded me of the way I was back then when I was their age. I felt really shy and nervous on my first days of school. It always happens from nursery, but when you reach first or second grade, it usually wears off, unless you transfer to another school.

Being exposed to an entirely new environment was more difficult than it may seem, I realized. Of course I knew it when I was young, but I really never understood then, until now. Suddenly I realized how hard it was for Yunho to be exposed and now I know, or remember, how it felt.

A parent approached me, the boy’s mother, and said she would be going and she trust me to look after her child. I smiled, assuring her. As expected, the boy started to cry. The mother of the girl left the room without saying anything, and the little girl was now frowning.

I immediately approached the boy and asked his name and I introduced myself. I learned his name was Tobi and I decided to introduce him to the other girl sitting at the edge of the room. Later on, I got the two of them, Tobi and Paula, to get along with each other. They were friends until the end of the first day of classes after that.

-------

Weeks went by, and everything was going well, except that I could visit the Jungs once a week now, but I still see my family once a week too and it stayed that way. I was beginning to get really busy.

Rrrrrriiinnng!!! The bell rang and everyone got cut their lunchesboxes and started to eat. OH, I love kindergarten! They’re not like those gradeschoolers who’d push each other to get out of the room. The little angels serenely ate inside, never caring about all the commotion happening outside.

As I put away the teaching paraphernalia on my desk, Kristy, my student, suddenly spilled her grape juice on the floor! I could see it in her face that she felt terribly bad. Children get pissed off really fast. I remember when I lost my pretty pencil one day when I was in nursery. I never attended our flag ceremony that day because I felt really bad for a reason that wasn’t very clear.

Seeing the juice spreading on the floor, I got the ever-ready rag cloth under my desk and wiped the floor clean. Then I kissed Kristy’s forehead and told her that everything’s fine now so there’s nothing more to worry about. I quickly got out of the room and pushed myself through the hallway-turned-jungle corridors outside the door. Kids were hurling soccer balls, paper balls, tennis balls, it was a mess! At last, I reached the restroom where I intend to rinse the soiled and soaked rag.

But just when I was stepping my foot inside, I caught sight of a familiar figure walking at the end of the hallway, looking lost.

“Yunho!” I called once I recognized him. What is he doing here?

Yunho heard me and turned around, trying to find where my voice came from. Carrying the dripping rag cloth, I walked to him and he found me,

“How did you find me?” I asked him once he waved ‘hello’. “Why are you here?”

“I just came from choir rehearsals and… I saw this sign on this school building and I recognized it” Yunho explained. “Sunny Town Elementary, right? I asked Freddy to pull over so I can pay you a visit.”

“Gee, thanks!” I laughed a little. “That’s very…thoughtful. I’m so sorry I wasn’t able to visit more often nowadays.”

“No, it’s definitely okay. I just wanted to see you, that’s all. Sorry if I bothered you classes."

“No not at all,” I shook my head. “It’s recess. No harm done, lucky for you.”

Yunho laughed. It’s so easy to make him laugh now. He couldn’t even fake a smile when I first met him.

But suddenly, out of nowhere, this kid accidentally bumped into me, causing me to push the purple-soiled cloth into Yunho’s beige colored woolen chaleco!

“(Gasp!) OMO!” I brushed his chaleco foolishly, as if that would help. “I’m so sorry, Yunho! I didn’t mean to…OmO! Mianhae…”

“Aniyo, Aniyo don’t worry. It’s fine.” Yunho tried to console me as I whinged over his obviously expensive garment.

“No, it’s not. Take it off and I’ll wash it for you when I get home.”

“You don’t have to, ~~~~~---“

“Yunho. Take it off. Now.”

My eyes flashed like lightning.

Yunho, silenced all of a sudden, bit his lip and took off his chaleco obediently like a lamb.

“You’re sure?” he asked me in a low voice.

“Yeah,” I immediately took his garment and tried to keep the grape juice-soaked rag cloth away from it. “I…should be going now. Recess time is almost done.” I glanced at the wall clock at the end of the hallway.

Yunho nodded his head and then told me he would be waiting until classes are over. But it was too late to protest because I was already pushing myself through the crowd and heading back to the comfort room, so I had no choice but to nod ‘yes’.

Classes were over and I met Yuri at the empty hallway, without any traces of the jungle that once inhabited it. I almost forgot that Yunho waiting for me if I didn’t see him standing with Freddy by the exit door.

Yuri nudged me with her shoulder.

“What is Yunho doing here?’

“Well, for no special reason. He just wanted to visit.”

“You know he’s here?”

“Ne,” I checked my large bag if his chaleco was there.

Yuri paused and looked at me seriously.

“Is he your boyfriend already?”

I smiled at her and shook my head.

“It doesn’t necessarily mean that way.”

“Why not? You’re with him every week, you always remember him throughout the day, he texts you everytime he reaches church and you get free piano concert everytime you visit him. Need I say more?”

“Yuri, it’s complicated,” I said as I waved to Yunho. “He’s a part of my life, but not in the sense that you’re thinking.”

“Or, maybe you’re just not opening your mind to other possibilities, ~~~~~~.”

“Love is always possible for a girl like you Yuri.” I laughed at her. “That’s why you can’t distinguish true love from puppy love. Every guy comes into your life is your soulmate.”

“Yah, that’s not true. Leeteuk is my soulmate.”

I signed. Apparently, that’s what she said with her preceeding boyfriend, but I wasn’t planning on arguing further with Yuri. There’s no point in discussing a topic like this with her.

We reached Freddy and Yunho and we stopped walking.

“Annyeong,” Yunho smiled at me, then at Yuri. “Annyeong Yuri.”

“Good heavens! That was actually the first time you said my name!” Yuri exclaimed, elated. “I didn’t realize you look pretty cute when you smile, Yunho oppa.”

Yunho blushed again, not knowing what to say.

"Are you going to bring ~~~~~~ home?” Yuri raised her eyebrows. “Because I’m not sure if she’s going home with me on my car, or you have other plans.”

Aniyo. That’s what you and your boyfriend does, Yuri, I said to myself. I shook my head at her but Yunho answered for me.

“N-no,” he said. “Not yet.”

“Not yet?” Yuri Frowned. “You mean you are taking her home.”

“Well, I have something to show her so I—“

“Oh I get it! You’re going to play something for her on your portable organ again, are you?

Yunho left his mouth open, surprised at how Yuri seemed to know everything.

“W-wow,: he laughed a little. “Y-you’re good.”

Yuri giggled at him.

“Aw, how cute is he? Well, I better head home now before you, ~~~~~~. Bye girl.”

“Bye Yuri.” I waved my fingers at her as she ran to her car.

As soon as she was gone, I faced Yunho.

“You wanted to show me something?”

“Yes, he did.” Freddy showed me Yunho’s organ.

We came out of the school and Yunho and I sat on the long bench at the playground. Freddy came to the car parked further ahead.

And so like a whiz, Yunho started playing a melody again which is lasted in about three to Four minutes.

“What song is that?” I asked, curiously.

“The Lord’s prayer,” Yunho answered “It’s a new version. It’s very original because Father Danny made it. I was the first to be taught it.

“It’s beautiful,” I praised. “ The parish community will surely like it.”

“I hope so, but I know it will.” Yunho took the large batteries off the back of the organ. “We’re going to have an emergency choir rehearsal tomorrow, so the choir would be able to sing it along the piano.”

“Looks like you’re really busy now.” I embraced my bag. “Wait. Do you still manage to pray the rosary daily, to pray before and after you sleep and before and after meals? Are you still helping the kids with their home work? You know Sunye is busy and it’s up to you to help them.

Yunho was laughing once I was halfway through my statement.

“I sure missed you.” He sighed after that.

“Which exactly did you miss?” I put the strap of my bag over my shoulder and stood up. “Me or my nagging?”

Yunho stood up and walked after me. “Both.”

The sun was already at eye-level. The two of us started to walk towards the car. Freddy saw us and started the engines. It was time to go.
