At some point in your life, you will realize that no one has a ‘normal’ life at all. When I was young, like when I was in elementary, life seemed so carefree. Ne, I had problems, but not the kind that I would ask God for help.

The life I am living now at this point completely normal, but I know it won’t be for long. Do you know how people always tell you to think positively? This is often misconceptualized. Yuri often tells me I’m a negative-thinker, for I always bear in mind that today may be well and happy, but tomorrow may have trials in store. Is that really being negative? I came to realize that being ‘blind’ to storms that may wreck your life, but being optimistic that there will always be a solution for every knot, a rainbow after the rain, and a day after the night.

My ‘normal’ life ended at the end of the semestral break, in the principal’s office.

“Why did you call me, Mrs. Derby?” I asked her as I closed the door silently behind me. The office smelled like coffee; it always does. I could her the old printer zing.

“Your mother’s on the,” Mrs. Derby pointed to the cream-colored phone with her lips, her hands running through the papers under her desk.

“Oh,kamsahamnida,” I immediately reached for the headset laid upside-down on the desk and picked it up. “Umma?”

“~~~~~~, you have to come here right now.” Umma’s voice sounded muffled and she was very tense. “We’re in Dally Hospital.”

Fear gnawed at my heart.

“Hospital?” I said my voice shaking. “W-wae? What happened?”

“It’s Key,” I heard umma sniff. “He’s…he’s hurt..”

“Muot?!” I got extremely worried.

“Something bad happened to him at school.” Umma’s voice started to shake. “He was beat up. Someone hit a stump of wood at his head…He’s….He’s in coma.”

“God…” I whispered unconsciously. “H-how is he?! Why did they do that to him?!

“Oh, just come here!” umma obviously didn’t want to talk about it anymore. “You know where the hospital is just—call a cab and come here.”

Umma put down the phone after I thought I heard her cry and sob at the other end of the line. My airway was tightening. I couldn’t breathe; I was so worried.

I immediately put down the headset as soon as I could think a little straight and I borrowed a pen and paper from Mrs. Derby.

My handwriting was little hard to understand but I didn’t care anymore. I wrote an activity for the class I will be leaving and left it with Mrs. Derby then I shot out of the room and headed to the faculty room to pick up my bag.

As I called a cab and rode on it as it stopped, I whispered. “God, please don’t let anything bad happen to my brother.”

The taxi stopped in front of the large building. I took a quick glance at Dally Hospital. It’s once green walls are now painted white.

“Komawo,” I quickly gave the driver the money and got off the cab.

As I climbed up the steps to the main entrance, I remembered the last time I was in that hospital. That was when I was sixteen and I got delirious from fever.

I immediately approached the girl sitting at the long table. She must be a receptionist or something.

“Shillejiman, (Excuse me,)” I tucked my hair behind my ear. “I’m looking for a patient named Key—Key ~~~~~(your last name)”

“Chamkkanmanyo, (One moment please,)” she tapped at the keyboard “….Key ~~~~~(your last name)?”

“N-ne, that’s him,” I beamed.

“Room 309, third floor,” she said, then pointed to the hallway to my right. “The elevator’s right there.”

“Thank you so much.” I felt very grateful for her wonderful service. She was so fast I could meet Key in a short while.

I stood in front of the elevator and pressed the ‘up’ arrow. I waited for an eternity, then I heard the ‘ding!’ sound I’ve long been waited for.

The door opened and I saw a couple of people inside, and they went out. Suddenly, I saw Appa come out along with them. I forgot to come inside.

“Appa!” I called to him.

“Yah, ~~~~~~,” he said as he saw me. “I was just going to get some food.”

“How—how is he?”

Appa was about to answer when the elevator door was closing.

“Go” he slightly pushed me, “You’ll miss the elevator .”

I decided to get in. I fit my hand through the small gap left and the door opened again. I squeezed myself in with the other people and pressed the button with the number, ‘3’.

Finally, we reached the floor. I immediately got out and found myself in a large, white-painted hallway. The chairs at the sides of the halls were all occupied with people.

I immediately went to find the room.

301, 302, 303, 304, 305.

There was a turning point. I decided to turn right, then finally, I laid my eyes on the door I was looking for.

309. Suddenly, I heard my umma’s voice. I turned around and saw her red and teary face as she talked to the doctor. She didn’t notice me come near her for she was listening very intently to what the doctor was saying.

“I don’t think anyone should see him yet because he’s still under observation,” I heard the doctor say.

“Okay…” my umma nodded her head.

“But until when?” I piped in on the conversation.

The doctor looked at me, surprised because I came from nowhere, but he answered me nevertheless.

“Right now that is uncertain,” he said to me, “but I’ll let you in on everything that’s happening to him to the last minute.”

“Thank you, doctor,” my umma thanked him as he nodded respectfully and went away.

“Umma,” I put my hand on top of her shoulder.

Umma looked at me and wiped her face with the tissue she was holding.

“The doctor said the injury he got was not fatal, and there are more chances of a quick recovery…” my umma tried to smile.

I breathed with great relief. “Oh, thank God!”

“I know,” she bit her lower lip. “I already did.”

I made her sit down on the last chair left in front of the room. Every chair was already occupied.

“Umma…” I held her hand to comfort her. “What really happened to key?...”

“Oh it’s terrible, ~~~~~~…” umma breathed deeply. “There were five of them…”

“Boys?” I raised my eyebrows. “B-but why?”

“I, I don’t know! His teacher was here and from her interviews from the boys, she got nothing important, really. When she asked them why they did that, they only said he was a wimp and he deserved it,” Umma started crying. “My son is never a wimp! He’s smart, and sweet and kind and he never crosses anybody!”

“Umma” I embraced her gently ran my palm through her back. “Calm down. I’m sure they have a better reason for doing that. What do you say I go to the school now and fix things up?” I glanced at my watch, seeing that classes are still ongoing.

“Aniyo, ~~~~~~,” she held my arm, “I don’t like you talking with bad people. They might do the same to you.”

“They can’t do anything to me, Umma.” I insisted

“Whatever. I’m not letting you,” Umma is very hard-headed.

“But I want to know why they did that, Umma.”

“For what?”

“For us to prevent it from happening again.”

“~~~~~~,” my umma sighed. “Our main concern at this moment is Key, and nothing else.”

I wet my lips and looked down. She was right.

“Okay….” I nodded.
“Besides,” Umma added, “Classes are almost over.”

“Hours passed ever so slowly. As I leaned on the wall at the edge of the waiting chairs, I tapped my foot impatiently. I watched as nurses occasionally came inside the room, with me peeking desperately at the inside of the room once they open the door, but I only see the foot of the bed and nothing else.

Appa coaxed umma to eat the apples and bananas he bought, but she wouldn’t eat.

I gritted my teeth every time I glance at the clock on the wall, seeing the hours pass. I’ve once read that the longer the patient is in a coma, the lesser the chances of recovery. I got more and more nervous as the clock ticked, so I figured that it would be better if I stepped out of the hospital for a while. Besides, I’m feeling that strange craving for candies again, so I thought I might buy some. It always happens to me when I’m in a lot tension.

I asked my parents for permission, then I proceeded to the elevator. I pushed the ‘down’ button and went inside once it opened.

My cellphone let out a sound it made when somebody texts me. I pressed ‘read.’ It was Yuri, asking me what’s going on why I didn’t attend the remaining classes. I texted her back, and the elevator door opened.

As I came outside, I saw that it was already sunset and the people got lesser. I knew there was a mini-grocery store beside this hospital, so I went there and bought a whole pack of chewy candy.

As I was getting back. I saw a teenage girl in a white blouse whose sleeves were a bit puffy and wore a long dark green checkered skirt.

It was maybe her school uniform. As she held the strap of her sling bag over her shoulder, she hurriedly walked into the parking lot and into the hospital. But then, a group of boys—there were three of them, wearing identical dark green shirts and dark green pants ran after her. One of them grabbed her arm and it scared her.

I stopped walking and stood at the side of the parking lot. What were they doing?

The girl, with straight brown hair fixed in half ponytail, pulled her arm violently away from him, then there was discussion. After a few seconds, one of the boys raised his hands and striked her face with one blow! The poor girl was pushed by another boy after that and she fell to the ground on her sling bag.

“Yah!” I couldn’t stand it any longer. “You three! Leave the girl alone and go back to the guidance office where you three belong to! And make it snappy!” I walked threateningly towards them, clutching the plastic bag of candy in my hand.

The three boys turned around and faced their horrible, pimply faces at me, their hair soaked with hair gel. They looked at me angrily. I stopped walking once I was five feet away from them.

“Do we know you?” said the tallest and thinnest.

“Ha!” said a chubbier one to his friend. “Don’t bother! Who cares about her name?”

“Well I don’t want to get to know you either.” I said, pretending to be brave. “I just want you to step away from the girl.”

“Do you think you can order us around just because you’re older?” said the third one.

“No. Strike me.” I said as I saw a guard coming.

So they did. The boy punched me hard on the cheek but I was able to dodge so they hit only my chin!

“Guard! Did you see that?!” I called the guard’s attention, who was at the parking lot, surprised. “These boys are causing trouble!”

The boys’ eyes widened once the guard ran to them and called others to help him. The threesome tried to run away but the guards were fast.

“B-but she told us to strike her!” the fat one called.

“It’s called ‘bluffing’ chubby. You should try it sometime,” I whispered to him.

I faced one guard. “Make sure that each of these three gets a good spanking from their mom once they get home.”

The guard nodded and proceeded with his job.

I faced the girl standing at the side of a car, her eyes wide and scared, showing the green of her eyes. I came to her.

“Are you okay?”

Um, yes. Thank you so much, I gotta go,” then she turned around and left me as she ran up the steps to the hospital.

“Wait.” I called. “Are you from Charleston University?”

She turned around in surprised. “Are you Key’s friend? He’s not supposed to be visited right now.”

Her face became more surprised, realizing I was right again. “Who are you?”

“I’m his noona, ~~~~~~,” I smiled at her.

“You’re ~~~~~~?” she smiled, her dimples showing. “Key’s told me a lot about you.”

“Really?....Well Key’s under observation. We’re still waiting for updates. Don’t worry. The doctor said there are more chances of recovery. All we can do is hope and pray.”

The girl sighed deeply with relief and closed her eyes for a moment, as if thanking God.

“That’s very sweet of you to visit.” I smiled at her, glad to have found a friend amidst all this misery. “You must be a close friend.”

Her pretty eyelashes dropped once she heard that. “After this, I don’t know about that…”

“What are you talking about?” I asked.

“I’m kind of blaming myself for what happened…” She said, without looking at me.

I froze.

“You know what happened? Please, tell me!” I held her shoulders.
