Chapter 30 You did it to me once. Remember?

The Ride to Fontana Gardens was short. It was already seven-fifteen in the evening and the car air-conditioner made me all the more nervous. Fancy vines and Christmas light hung from the car entrance, and the driver showed his I.D. to the guard and he let the driver in. The parking lot was full of gravel and other staff personnel assisted the driver to the parking space.

So, this was it. It’s time to get out of the car. As soon as Yuri and I went out, Yuri and I stood on cemented path, and we decided to go in once the crowd clears off. It was way too embarrassing.

My cell phone rang. It was Yunho.

I answered the phone. “Yeoboseyo?”

“~~~~~~”, came Yunho’s voice. “Where are you? Are you done preparing?”

“Yes, thank you so much. We weren’t expecting this at all. By the way, we’re already here.”
“Chincha? I can’t find you anywhere—hold on a second.” There was a pause. I heard him talk to somebody, than I heard his voice again, “Yeobaseyo?”

“Hello?” I answered back.

“Where are you?”

“I’m not sure… the entrance, I guess.”

“Entrance?”

“I don’t know, Yunho! don’t know this place. I don’t know if there’s a ‘grand’, entrance, or a ‘function room’ entrance or just a ‘lobby’ entrance in there. Tiffany and your driver deserted me and Yuri here and the people seem to be going in different directions!”

“Hold on a sec,” came Yunho’s reply. I heard him greet somebody again on the phone. He seemed to be very busy socializing with people.

Yuri pulled my arm. “I think I know where to go; follow me!”

And so I followed her. Anywhere but nowhere! I held my phone up to my ear and waited for Yunho to talk on the phone again. Yuri pulled me and we stood behind a bunch of people waiting to go inside a large, well- lit garden. Yuri was right. This was the place.

“~~~~~~?” I heard him again on the phone. I saw a man wearing a black, shiny-colored tux standing by the entrance and he shook Yuri’s Hand and he shook mine. Then, we proceeded inside. I stood just behind the man who stood by the door, maybe I could ask him for directions.

“Hello?” I whispered at my phone. “I’m already in the garden, where are you?”

“I’m standing by the entrance, greeting the people getting inside.”

I was paralyzed. Putting down my phone, I turned around and looked at the man behind me, holding a cell phone against his ear, shaking hands with the people getting inside.

The people almost bumped into me as soon as they got through him because I was in the way.

“Hello?” the man said to the phone as soon was free room guest. “~~~~~~?Hello?”

It was him! I got past him already and I didn’t recognize him with all the fancy-dressed people around me!

“Yunho?” I said to his brazen head for he was turned around. I saw him put down his phone.

“Yes?” he looked behind his back and looked at me like I was a stranger. How come he doesn’t seem to know me?
“Yunho!” I raised my eyebrows, and the expression on his face changed. Now he recognizes me!

“~~~~~~?...” he stared at me.

I immediately pulled Yuri beside me.

“Oh, Yunho. It’s you,” she muttered

But Yunho didn’t seem to pay any attention to her. He looked at me from head to toe, his eyes full of disbelief.

“Don’t worry,” I laughed at him. “I didn’t recognize myself, too, when I looked in the mirror.”

Yunho shook his head and laughed at himself. Yuri and I stared at him, wondering why.

“I didn’t know you’d turn out to be ten times more beautiful than how I pictured you to be.”

I stood still in my flattered state for a moment. I coyly smiled at him, my heart beating. “Kamsahamnida.”

“Hear that, girl ?!” Yuri nudged me annoyingly at my back. “He’s mesmerized!—“

“Yuri,” I gritted my teeth as I felt my face blushing, “will you please—“

“Oh Yuri!” Yunho suddenly exclaimed. “Yuri, annyeong.. I’m so sorry I didn’t notice you. Forgive me.”

“Yeah, yeah. I know,” Yuri lightly hit his arm. “~~~~~~’s just too gorgeous, everyone else is invisible, am I right?”

Yunho smiled shyly and looked down at his shoes, while I striked Yuri from her back because I was getting too humiliated.

“Oh, by the way,” I said. “Thank you Yunho for inviting the both of us, the gowns and or helping us prepare.”

“No, don’t thank me,” Yunho laughed. “I actually did that to make sure you would come because I know you’d refuse. I know what you’re going through right now and I know you’re not, in good shape to be in a celebration.”

“No, Yunho,” I shook my head. “It’s Sunye’s Birthday. I will surely do my best to come.”

“So where’s the grown-up girl now?” Yuri turned her head sideways.

“Sunye’s not supposed to be here yet,” Yunho led us to a table close to the artificial waterfall”

“You can wait here.” Then, he disappeared amongst the crowds.

As soon as he was gone. Yuri tapped my arm. “~~~~~~, I’m nervous I don’t know any of these people!” Both of us watched the lovely ladies, gentlemen and children dressed in the most elegant gowns and finest jewelry. I looked around the place and we were in the most beautiful garden I have ever seen! There was huge tree at one side, and oil lamps in glass bubbles were hung on its branches. Christmas lights hung at the walls containing the party area, looking like fireflies stuck to the wall as they blinked slowly. The grass beneath us looked to green and fresh and the dancefloor at the middle was so large and shiny! They must have laid out the flooring on the grass before the guest arrived. I can already imagine how rich the Jungs were. A party like this can cost thousands! For a moment I felt out of place. Then, someone spoke into the microphone by the large staircase beside the building. I thought there were also other function rooms in there.

“Everyone settle down please,” a pretty middle aged woman with a sultry voice spoke into the microphone. “The party will be starting. Before anything else, I would like to introduce myself: I am Victoria, your emcee for the night. And tonight, we are all here to celebrate with a very special girl as she is no longer a teenager, but a woman ready to take on a new chapter in her life.”

Everyone listened to her intently. Other people whom I don’t know sat in our table, and I politely smiled at the family and they smiled back.

“And so, without further a due,” Victoria continued. “It is a pleasure to present, the very beautiful: Jung Sunye!”

Everybody formally stood up and clapped, and the band played some music for Sunye. We all looked intently and excitedly up the stairs where she was expected to come down.

Soon Sunye appeared at the top of the stairs, looking like a princess. Her honey-brown hair was all straight and elegant hanging on her shoulder. Her pink beautiful gown was shimmering and sparkly, making her look like she is glowing while she stepped down the stairs, all smiles and happy. I can hear people gasp in wonder.

Then, there was a big buffet! Yuri and I coyly fell in line at the buffet table with others. I didn’t know any of the food, but they were delicious. Some food tasted weird though. After that, men cleared out the food and arranged the chairs while the rest of the guest stood and started to dance. The area became much more spacious once the men were swiftly cleared from the party area. Some of the people didn’t dance, but they carried champagne glasses and drank as they chatted with one another. Yuri was mixed with a group of boys and girls, who were all classmates of Sunye in her university, while I chatted with these two girls, whom I didn’t really know well.

“So, what did you say your name was again?” Jessica, one of the girls, asked after five minutes of conversation about the party, the food and the venue.

“It’s ~~~~~~,” I played with my glass of champagne and sipped some of it. I savored every drop of it because I rarely get to drink such an expensive drink. “And you’re.”Hyuna, the other girl.
Cut in, “a friend of the Jungs?”

“Yes,” I nodded my head. “I’m a teacher actually. I just came from classes hours ago.”

“Really?” Hyuna raised her eyebrows. “You’re too young. I thought you were a student, like us.”

“No,” I laughed, “not anymore.”

“You’re so industrious. You actually still came to work when you know there’s going to be a party tonight.” Jessica praised. “If I were you, I won’t attend to the school for this day.”

“Well it’s really hard to have an absence,” I reasoned. “But actually, I didn’t know that it was Sunye’s birthday today!”

“Too busy?” Jessica didn’t seem to get my point.

“W-well not exactly— “

“You know, you should slow dawn a bit,” Hyuna raised her eyebrows again. “Do you have a boyfriend?”

“W-well… no, I don’t.”

“See? You’re to busy with your life!” Jessica Insisted.

“You Know,” I laughed, “I’m not in a rush. I’m still young and I don’t feel the need to be in a relationship right now,”

“Oh, I see,” Hyuna bit her lip. “Middle class people really have to work hard and set aside other things for a while…”¬¬

Yes, I know you’re rich, but you don’t have to step on my dignity. I wanted to say to her.

“I think you’ll be an old maid…” Jessica looked at me, her eyes twinkling to my disghust. “You’re too busy to stop and live your life.”

“Actually,” I said, my voice changing into a less friendlier tone, “I am living my life. I love the kids I teach, I have the best family, and I step on nobody.”

“Chill out,” Hyuna scoffed at me and slyly looked at Jessica. “You don’t have to be so defensive!”

“You know, you can just keep your pride to yourself,”Jessica looked at me from head to toe.
“Save it for your forties, so you won’t have to pity yourself when you become an old maid!” She looked at me and rolled her eyes.

The, I felt a hand come over my shoulders

“An old maid?” said the man who went beside me. “Why would my girlfriend become an old maid?”

Girlfriend? I am nobody’s girlfriend! What is this guy talking about? I looked up and saw Yunho smiling at them!

“W-what?” Hyuna frowned. “You’re her boyfriend. Yunho? Yeah, right.”

“Why did she tell us she didn’t have a boyfriend?” Jessica raised her chin.

“She lied,” Yunho said to them. “Now, will please leave her alone?”

Jessica scoffed. “I don’t know, Yunho. You’ve change. You’re not the same anymore! Where’s the quiet and meek Yunho that we have known?”

“He’s not gone Jessie,” Yunho replied. “He’s here, but in the right situations. In this case, I will not stand quietly nearby, definitely, and watch you two pick on my girlfriend.” Then he pulled me closer to him, I clumsily almost spilled the champagne I was holding.

Then, took my hand and led me away from them.

“Yunho!” called Jessica from behind us with furry. “I told you never to call me Jessie!”

Yunho turned around and waved his fingers. “Bye, Jessie!”

I giggled at him. Yunho could be a pest at times when he wants to. Then, he took the glass from my hand and laid it on the table. He held my hand and put his other hand over my waist, and we started to dance with the other older people with us.

“You didn’t have to do that Yunho.” I told him a few seconds later. “It’s alright with me.”

“But with, me it’s not,” Yunho replied. “I won’t let anyone make you feel inferior, ~~~~~—ever.”

I smiled at him gratefully. “Who are they, anyway?”

“My cousins.”

“Really?.... That explains why they seem to know you too well…”

“They don’t.” Yunho said, firmly. “They never did.”

I decided to change the atmosphere of the discussion into a light mood again.

“You shouldn’t have told them I was your girlfriend,” I said to him, putting a jolly tone in my voice.

Thank goodness, he smiled again.
“Be fair,” he looked smugly at me, “you did it to me once. Remember?’

I paused and looked down to think. Then it hit me of course, I did do that… in downtown Gym by the corndog stand!

I looked up at his smiling face upon remembering. “That was a very long time ago, Yunho

“Not quite,” he disagreed with me. “It has only been almost half a year.”

“And that’s not long enough for you?”

“It’s still so fresh in my memory! Did you think I would easily forget the day you handcuffed our wrist together?”

“Yes!” I laughed at him. “I was too crazy to have done that!”

Then he removed his hands and held my wrist. Pulling it gently, he said , “come with me. I’ll show you something.”

I stood still, “What?”

“Come on!” he turned around and pulled me out of the party area. “You’ll see.”
