Mrs. Haneul paused to think.
“Well… We’re not really sure. But he showed signs when he was two.”
My eyes widened. “Two years old?”
“Yes…”
“That’s very early… Because, Mrs. Haneul, we know that a weak spirit is the cause of possession, and a poor faith. Were there any physical or emotional abuse during his infancy?”
“No…not at all…”
“Were there any problems during pregnancy?”
Her eyes widened upon realizing something.
“Ah…yes. In fact, there is.”
I raised my eyebrows.
“It was a very long time ago when Mina and my son Warren weren’t married yet,” Mrs. Haneul narrated, “They were young and have just finished college. They were only lovers by then, and one thing led to another, until Mina discovered that she was pregnant. That was Yunho in her womb.”
I listened intently to Mrs. Haneul.
“So in other words, it was an unwanted pregnancy,” she continued. “To tell the truth, my son and Mina felt great regret because they realized that they didn’t really love each other, from the very start. They were only carried away by their emotions … and so, they broke up … I scolded my son and told him to take responsibility over the child, but he insisted that marriage is not the solution. But what about Mina? She was pursuing her masteral degree and her pregnancy might hinder her from defending her oral thesis. I visited her in her home and she told me she was planning on aborting the child! She told me how much she despised it and wished it never existed. But I pleaded her to keep the child.”
“So… that’s why Yunho was so weak,” I realized. “From the moment of his conception, he felt that his mother hated him. A baby in a womb feels what his mother feels.”
“You are right, exactly.” Mrs. Haneul nodded her head. “Now, I know what caused it. Thanks to you."
I smiled and felt proud of myself
“But what happened to Warren and Mina?”
“Well…” Mrs. Haneul fixed her spectacles. After I pleaded Mina to keep the baby in her womb, she finally gave in. After all, it was bad to abort the baby and she knew that. I couldn’t force them to marry because the insisted on taking care of the baby only. When Mina had given birth to Yunho and she Warren took care of him together, they fell in love with each other in the process. So they decide to marry, and they finally learned to love Yunho because he was the main reason that they realized that it was fate that willed them to be together and not accident.”
I smiled at Mr. and Mrs. Jung’s story. “That’s…very nice. It’s too bad that it was too late for Yunho to feel that his parents really loved him and this is what happened to him.”
Mrs. Haneul stared at me, ever so seriously.
“Will you help him? Will you help Yunho?” she asked with imploring eyes.
I held Mrs. Haneul’s hand.
“I will do whatever it takes to help him.” I promised to her, and I promised to God that I would help Yunho overcome this obstacle no matter how hard it might be.
