Chapter 24

Raymond and Tavia on the other hand, decided to take a walk on the beach so they drove to Repulse Bay beach. During the car ride, both of them were very quiet. They walked hand in hand on the beach without saying anything.
“You full from dinner?” Raymond broke the silence between the two and asked Tavia.
“Yep. Very.” Tavia smiled. Immediately after Tavia’s reply, they were back into their silent mode again.
Another 10 minutes of silence passed by and Tavia could no longer stand it. The thought of Nancy liking Raymond has been bugging her the whole night. “Ray…” Tavia said quietly.
“Yes?” Raymond stopped and looked at Tavia.
“There’s something… something I wanted to ask you.” Tavia mumbled.
“What is it?” Raymond asked worriedly.
“Do you think… Can you feel that Nancy likes you?” Tavia asked.
“Is this some kind of joke?” Raymond laughed.
“I’m serious Ray. Can’t you feel it?” Tavia asked seriously.
“Come on… She’s like a little sister to me. She knows I’m going out with you.” Raymond explained.
“But… Look how she treats you. She’s seeking your attention all the time, she…” Tavia tried to find the evidence to prove herself right.
“How come you’re feeling like this all of a sudden?” Raymond asked as he listened to Tavia.
“I didn’t really start to feel it until Ron reminded me.” Tavia explained.
“Ron?” Raymond cried out. “Him again?!”
“What do you mean him again?” Tavia questioned him.
“What do I mean? Come on, is he trying to break us up by starting little rumors?” Raymond continued asking angrily.
“Why would he do that?” Tavia asked.
“You’re asking me WHY?” Raymond raised his voice. “Coz he wants us to break up so he can get back together with you!”
“That’s rubbish. Stop changing topics. We’re talking about YOU and NANCY! NOT Ron and I. Ron doesn’t like me anymore. Why are you so sensitive all the time?” Tavia loosened her hand from Raymond’s.
“Me? Sensitive? How do you know he doesn’t like you anymore? You guys are always talking and laughing without me! How am I to know what you guys are talking about?!” Raymond exclaimed.
“RAYMOND LAM, SAY THAT AGAIN?!” Tavia demanded.
“Say what?” Raymond asked.
“At the end of the day, you don’t seem to trust me, do you? Fine. If you don’t really trust me, then this whole relationship is pretty meaningless. And for your information, I know Ron doesn’t like me anymore because he thinks Nancy is cute and wants to get to know her more. IT’S YOU who seems to be having to the problem in realizing that Nancy likes you!” Tavia exclaimed. “You know what? I’m glad this came up today. Or else I wouldn’t know that you never trusted me. We’re lucky we haven’t gotten married yet.” Tavia forced a smile slipped her engagement ring off. She handed the ring back to Raymond and left. When she turned around, a tear rolled down her cheeks.
Raymond stood there dumbfounded with the ring in his hand. He didn’t know how to react or which problem he should deal with first. The fact that Nancy likes him or the fact that Tavia had just decided to break up with him. All he could do was stand there and see Tavia walk away and eventually disappear.

Raymond sat on the beach himself for a while and tried to process everything that has just happened this evening. Suddenly he took his phone out and he called Nancy.
“Hello Nancy?” Raymond said calmly.
“Sorry, Nancy is not around right now. She’s in the bathroom. Is this Raymond?” Ron asked on the other line.
“Ron?” Raymond uttered.
“Yep. I’m having a drink with Nancy right now.” Ron replied. Raymond didn’t say anything. He was thinking of what Tavia told him about Ron liking Nancy.
“Raymond…?” Ron asked.
“Sorry… I’m here.” Raymond replied.
“Is everything okay? Where are you guys?” Ron asked curiously. “You guys want to join us for a drink?”
“Um… Ron, can I ask you something?” Raymond mumbled.
“Sure.” Ron replied.
“Do you like Nancy?” Raymond asked.
“I can’t say I like her this moment. I only met her today. But to be frank, I think she’s a really cute girl and if I have the chance, I’d like to get to know her better.” Ron laughed.
“So you don’t like… Tav?” Raymond mumbled again.
“Of course no. She and I are history. Plus, she’s happy with you now.” Ron laughed.
“She said she’s happy with me?” Raymond asked.
“Of course. I’ve never seen her this happy. Plus she told me herself.” Ron continued.
“Did Nancy mention to you while you guys talked that she likes me?” Raymond asked.
“We were just talking about it…” Ron replied.
“Tavia knows that Nancy likes me?” Raymond continued.
“Well, I guess.” Ron said.
“How did she react to it?” Raymond asked.
“Well, she’s very confident in you. But she was just worried about Nancy. She wanted you to sort things out with Nancy as soon as possible because the longer you leave matters, it’s just going to hurt Nancy more.” Ron explained.
Raymond was shocked. He hit himself on the forehead and cried out “Damn!” He should have listened to Tavia.
Raymond, you seem to have an awful lot of questions tonight. Is everything okay?” Ron asked worriedly.
“Ron, where are you guys? Can you guys wait for me… I’m coming right now. I need to sort something out first.” Raymond told Ron.
“Sure. We’re at Jazz Club. Nancy recommended the place.” Ron replied.
“I’ll come now.” Raymond said and hung up.
Just at that moment, Nancy came back. “Who was that?” she asked.
“Raymond. He said he’s coming now.” Ron said.

In Jazz Club.
15 minutes later, Raymond arrived. “Hey you guys.” Raymond said as he walked over to Nancy and Ron.
“Is everything okay? You sounded so serious on the phone.” Ron asked.
“Nancy can I ask you something?” Raymond asked.
“Of course Raymond-Gor.” Nancy replied.
“Is it true that you like me?” Raymond continued asking.
Nancy widened her eyes. “Um… yes.”
Ron seeing Nancy’s reaction remained quiet.
“I… I… There’s something I need to clear up.” Raymond mumbled. “I know I have no right to control who you like and I’m very flattered that you like me. However Nancy, there is no way I can return the same feelings you have for me. I’ve always treated you like a little sister…”
“I… I understand.” A tear started to roll down Nancy’s cheeks.
“I’m so sorry Nancy. The person I love is Tavia. She’s the one I love and the only one in my heart.” Raymond continued.
“I’m sorry Raymond-Gor. Did I do something wrong?” Nancy sobbed.
“It’s not your fault. It’s my fault… Sorry Nancy. I love you as a sister… Please don’t cry.” Raymond said as he wiped the tear off her face. He smiled and hugged her.
“I’m okay wor. Glad you cleared things up with me now… so I can move on!” Nancy chuckled. “Don’t worry. I got Ron here with me. I’ll be okay. Ron’s a great guy to talk to.” Nancy smiled.
“Take good care of her for me?” Raymond patted Nancy’s head and looked at Ron.
“Don’t worry. I will. I sense that there’s something more important for you to deal with now…” Ron patted Raymond on the shoulders.
“Yes. Thanks man.” Raymond smiled. “Bye Lang-mui.” Raymond turned around and left.

On the way to his car, Raymond took his phone out and called Tavia. However, he couldn’t get through. Tavia must have turned her phone off. Raymond got in his car and drove to Tavia’s house.

Outside Tavia’s house.
“Hi Matt. Is Tavia back?” Raymond asked anxiously.
“Hey Raymond. No. She’s not back yet. I thought she’s with you.” Matt replied.
“No she’s not. It’s okay then. I’ll call her and see where she is.” Raymond replied and left. He took his phone out and called Tavia again. Unfortunately, he still couldn’t get through. He started to panic. He searched for Leila’s number and called her.
“Hey Lei… It’s Raymond. Did Tavia call you?” Raymond asked nervously.
“Shouldn’t you know where she is?” Leila asked sarcastically.
“Please Leila. We got into a fight. I need to find her to apologize. Please.” Raymond begged Leila on the other line.
“I can’t believe you Raymond Lam. I really don’t want to talk to you… do you know how upset Tavia is?” Leila said angrily.
“I know I said something mean and I really regret having said them. Please Leila… can you please tell me where she is?” Raymond continued begging. He was really panicking now.
“If you cared about her that much, why did you not trust her?”
“I don’t know what hit me then. Please Leila.” Raymond begged as he hit his forehead.
“I would tell you if I knew. But I really don’t know. She called me a while ago and was crying. But when I asked her where she was, she refused to tell me.” Leila explained.
“My God. Tavia where are you?” Raymond mumbled.
“However, I think I heard some sound at the background… I think it was…” Leila was trying to recall what she heard.
“What did you hear?” Raymond asked.
“The sea… waves… she’s probably on a beach.” Leila said.
“Thanks Lei.” Raymond said happily.
“How do you know which beach?” Leila asked.
“I’ll look. I have to. Got to go.” Raymond said and hung up.
