When Gillian awoke in the morning, she wasn't surprised to be in my room, but surprised to be in my bed. I had carried her there earlier in the morning, right when I was about to try and sleep. I couldn't sleep though. I was in my computer chair, watching her sleep all night. Why did she have to have a boyfriend? Why hasn't she ever noticed my feelings? "What am I doing in your bed?" Gillian asked me quickly. "Did we do anything??" She was really worried. I laughed a bit.

"No, we didn't do anything. Don't worry, you didn't hurt Deep," I told her. Gillian smiled. "Do you want to go through the doors or over the ladder?"

"I don't want people thinking that we did anything since I stayed the night, because I mean... it's you!" Gillian said. How nice. Because it's me? She is constantly stating that we'll never have a chance, unintentionally, of course!

Joy. Another day at school. Why we have to come here is beyond my knowledge. I entered through the double doors to be greeted by Ruby Lin and Kenny Kwan. Kenny was one of my friends, I guess, but we're not that close. I'm kind of the person who watches and listens, but never tries to forge a friendship with anyone. Ruby always greets me to say hi, and then tries to flirt. I say "try" because I never return the action. Her feelings are pretty one-sided. Reminds me of how Gillian and I are.

I walk down the hallways to get to my locker when I see Gillian. She looks so beautiful, and I'm jealous of Deep, who gets to hold her, and receive her affections. A sigh released from my mouth accidentally while I pulled my locker open to retrieve my Calculus book. In my locker, I keep three books: Calculus, Trigonometry, and Physics. Yes, you're right, I'm a math genius, but NOT a math nerd. I repeat, NOT A NERD. Those are the only three classes I'm taking this year. "Hello Edison," Deep greeted me politely. I nod my head in acknowledgement and averted my glance to Gillian.

"Did you get enough sleep last night?" I asked. Gillian's face turned a shade pink and nodded, her eyes never leaving the floor.

"Yes Ed, I had plenty of sleep, thank you for your hospitality," She mumbled. I smiled and turned around to head off to my first class.

"What the hell was that about?" Deep asked when he though I was out of earshot. His tone as a little harsh, so I turned around, ready to kick his ass.

"Don't speak to her like that," I said sternly.

"Ed, it's okay, he's not doing anything bad!" Gillian tried to ward me off.

"Sorry, Gill, I didn't mean for that to come out like that. I just wanted to know what had happened," Deep said.

"I woke her up at three this morning so that I can get my bracelet fixed," I told him, holding up my wrist where my bracelet was dangling. "It broke and it's one of my prized possessions." Deep nodded.

"Okay, now that that is cleared up..." He turned to Gillian and began to kiss her. That is my cue to leave.

"Better not hurt her..." I muttered under my breath.

Calculus was um... interesting. My brain was hurting halfway through. My notes seemed confusing:

Functions: A rule f that assigns to each element in a set S a unique element in a set T, which is written f : S¡úT.
Elementary Functions: A standard library of functions including the linear, polynomial, rational, power, and trigonometric functions.

Other than that, I spaced out.

Lunch arrived quicker than I wanted. I really had no place I felt really comfortable in the lunch room. In my first year, for about two weeks, I ate with Gillian. That was the most comfortable I felt in my whole high school experience. Good things never last too long.

I walked into the cafeteria, just to see what was going on. I saw Ruby and Kenny eating with Nic Tse, Bobo Chan, and Steven Cheung. Eason Chan, one of the only people who takes the exact classes as me, was eating by himself. Poor guy, but I don't feel bad enough to go sit with him. Then we had Wong Faye sitting with Shawn Yue, opposite of them: Gillian and Deep. I had to take my eyes away from Gillian because watching her shove her tongue in his mouth made me burn, especially when he accepted, and welcomed it.

I pivoted out of the lunch room and made my way to the library. "Already ate lunch Edison?" The librarian asked. I shook my head.

"No, I lost my appetite," I told her. She smiled and waved me on. I walked up the stairs to the fiction area. I closed my eyes, running my hand over the tops of the books, and pulled one out when I felt it was rich.

Pandora, by Anne Rice. I flipped open the cover and began to read.

"Not twenty minutes has passed since you left me here in the cafe, since I said No to your request, that I would never write out for you the story of my mortal life, how I became a vampire and how I came upon Marius only years after he had lost his human life."

The first paragraph had intrigued me. Part love story, part history. I sat down in one of the lounge chairs stationed around the library.

About halfway though the book, the bell interrupted my reading. Time for the last class of the day, Physics. I showed the librarian that I was taking the book, and as if routine, she nodded in acknowledgement.

As soon as I entered Physics, I was ready to leave. "Mr. Chen, you don't mind a new student sitting by you, do you?" Mr. Lin asked as I walked past him.

"Huh? Oh, no, I don't mind," I said. I saw that it was a girl, who could look like Gillian if you really think about it, but Gillian's prettier. I sat down next to her.

"My name is Charlene Choi! I transferred from Canada here to Hong Kong. T was so different in Canada, you know?" Charlene blabbered on and on and on. She just talks, and talks, and talks, and never shuts up! And why me? Why does she have to talk to me? Just because I'm sitting next to her doesn't mean I want her to keep talking to me. It' s plain and simple. But that simple task wouldn't suit her.

"Edison Chen," I introduced myself. She seemed taken aback that I talked back.

"Oh my god! You actually talked to me? Most people just yell at me to shut up," she said.

"Gee, I wonder why," I replied sarcastically. She didn't seem to pick up on it.

"I know! They're so rude. I'm so happy that you're talking to me. We're going to be really good friends right?"

"I don't make friends. I have my one, and that's good enough."

"Your girlfriend?"

"No. I don't have a girlfriend. I have a girl as a friend but not a girlfriend." Rub it in more Edison.

"You know, I like making friends. So that's why we're going to be friends."

"No, I don't want anymore friends." Charlene diverted her attention to my bracelet. She began to play with it when I jerked away and it shattered everywhere.

"Oh gosh! I'm so sorry!!" Charlene said. My bracelet. It broke again. Why is it always breaking???

"Damn girl! My bracelet!" I was pissed off. My bracelet!!

Outside of the school, Charlene was tailing me, following me home. "Can we hang out? Maybe go for some coffee? Just as friends. Come on Eddie, let's go!!" Charlene kept begging me.

"Eddie? Why are you calling him Eddie? Who are you?" A voice asked defensively. I stopped dead in my tracks. What is Gillian doing out here? I turned in my tracks. She looked like she was having fun with this.

"I'm Charlene Choi!" Charlene introduced herself.

"She's nobody," I insisted. Gillian raised an eyebrow and I walked over to her. "I need you to fix my bracelet once again. SHE," I put emphasis on she "broke it during Physics."

"Again? Fix your bracelet again?" Gillian complained.

"Are you his girlfriend?" Charlene asked. Gillian was shocked by the question.

"NO! Gosh, me and Edison?" Gillian burst out laughing. "We've known each other too long."
